A little perspective

Today is a dark day the team that I have known and loved for the past 20 years traded away their best player. Alot of people on this website are angry, and sad. I'm here to add a little perspective about the Chris Paul trade. I'm going to say this, and if you don't feel like reading anymore you can stop. The Chris Paul trade is not the end of the world.

Chris Paul no doubt is a top 10 player in the league. Arguably and most people would agree the best point guard in the league. Chris Paul had no intentions of signing back with the Hornets. Let's face it Hornet fans with the way things were going we didn't have a championship team, and we weren't going to have one for quite sometime. Paul wasn't going to wait around for another 3 or 4 years to get one. The Hornets have been cursed sometime with a bad owner and New Orleans isn't great market for basketball. Paul get's wish and will team up with Kobe Bryant, and maybe soon with Dwight Howard. I'm happy for him, and I salute the effort he gave as our leader. I will always cherish the time Paul had with the Hornets.

Going on to the trade. New Orleans gets some nice pieces to work with. Lamar Odom the 6th man of the year comes to New Orleans. He is one of the most versatile big men in the league. He can score, rebound, and in my opinion plays good defense. He can also shoot the ball pretty well also. The Hornets will probably bring him off the bench. The Hornets also get Luis Scola who in my opinion is one of the most underrated power forwards in the league. The guy can play ball, and he is in my opinion equal to what David West gave this team. Also in the trade is Kevin Martin. Martin might have his flaws as a player but the guy can flat out score. I watched New Orleans several times last year and they had trouble scoring the basketball. They desperately needed a good wing player and they got it with Martin. Last but not least the Hornets also got Goran Dragic another player who i believe is on the edge of breaking out. He needs more playing time and he wasn't going to get that with Phoenix not as long as Steve Nash was there.

All in all not the best day in the world to be a Hornets fan, but I believe they got some quality pieces back with players who are already proven, and I think that is the key. You want players that have already proven they can play in this league not players who you think one day could play in this league. Suppose the Hornets traded Paul to the clippers and had gotten Deandre Jordan back as a piece. Yes I know many of the people on this site are in love with Jordan's raw athletic ability, but what if he never develops? That is a strong possibility in my opinion. The Hornets did the smart and right thing here. I know many of you may disagree with me, and I would love to hear your sentiments. For every ending their is a new beginning I am looking forward to the next chapter in Hornets history.

As to the first two paragraphs, the vast majority of people here were not deluded, we knew it was betting against the odds to re-sign CP3, we know we’ve had bad ownership, we know we’re in a small market.

In re the latter two, Odom is 32 and he’s aged gracefully statistically-speaking in part because as a 6th man on the Lakers (often a starter when Bynum or others were frequently injured & out), it’s not exactly a challenge when you’ve got some and/or permutation of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, and Andrew Bynum on the floor to get some good looks. Nobody thinks he’s worthless mind you. He’s old and getting older, and the looks he get aren’t going to be half as good as the open opportunities he had in L.A.. He’s a much better version of James Posey. I’m not exactly ecstatic. He’s too old for a team that needs to get rebuilt with young talent and not big enough a name to get fans to care about the Hornets.

Martin is a good scorer, but he’s not a young stud, his FG% is as low as Ariza’s, he can’t play defense, and – most damningly IMO – he’s only an efficient scorer if he/he makes his meal ticket by getting to the foul line 10-20 times a game, a fact that scares me considering he’s missed substantial chunks of games due to injury. A guy who gets hurt because he’s not very athletic or strong, but can score if he’s hit enough times to draw fouls and get to the line. I don’t like it.

Scola is an X-factor. He’s a good player, but how good is a big T.B.D. His best years have been on Houston teams where the Rockets have been without Yao and usually playing from behind, which have enabled him to put up – to some unknown extent – pretty good numbers since it’s not like teams were going to play incredibly stout defense against Rockets teams that were regularly playing from behind with Chuck Hayes at center. Scola is good. IMO, his stats. are somewhat padded. The big question is by how much. I don’t like that level of uncertainty and would rather hedge our bets on evaluating talent on multiple first round picks in the NCAA’s upcoming totally stocked drafts.

Goran Dragic. Really? “The edge of breaking out”? That has to be a joke.

Your hypo. in re DeAndre Jordan not breaking out but touting Goran Dragic makes me nauseous. It’s not personal – I believe you were joking about Goran Dragic being a good piece for the team – it’s simply because DeAndre Jordan has been developing in spite of lackluster coaches, would have thrived under a defense-minded coach like Monty, and Goran Dragic is just bad. There’s a reason the Clippers offer DJ $40 million and the Suns with an aging Steve Nash and the Rockets whom have had an indeterminate status at PG for years are willing to deal away Dragic. It makes me sick.

I appreciate the spirit of your message and agree nobody should go too far in reacting, but I think your message confuses peoples’ frustration: It’s not that we thought we had a great shot to retain Paul, it’s that the deal stinks to a great many people.

well the deal is off

but i dont think it stunk at all. kevin martin is a career 44.5 percent shooter. he’s a much better shooter than Ariza and comparing the 2 is like comparing apples and oranges. Martin shoots more therefore his percentage would not be that high to begin with. Also Martin has been a consistent option on each team that he has played for. He sees his fair share of double teams. Ariza struggled to be the # 3 option and # 4 option last year.

If the trade does go back on tomorrow ...

I think it’s likely most of these players will be flipped again for younger players and/or draft picks. I think it’s a decent theoretical value for CP3, considering he is leaving anyway, but they’re not the ideal players to build for the future. I think trading a player like CP3 is at least a 2 part process where you trade him to a contender like the Lakers for multiple players who you can then trade again for draft picks. All in all I actually hope it’s allowed to go through, because otherwise what a mess!
