NBA Rumors: David West Appears Headed to the Boston Celtics in a Sign and Trade
NBA.com's David Aldridge and CBS Sports' Ken Berger report that free agent power forward David West appears on the verge of a move to the Boston Celtics, on a three year deal worth between $27M and $29M. West would be dealt in a sign and trade with the expiring contract of Jermaine O'Neal being sent back to New Orleans in return, as well as possibly another player like sophomore guard Avery Bradley.
The move would seem to make sense for the Hornets, a franchise in transition, with Chris Paul expected to be moved in the coming days. The Hornets could certainly have offered West much more than the $9M/year the Celtics are offering him, but have apparently chosen to move in a different direction. Best of luck to West who's been an absolute professional for the Hornets, on and off the court, for much of the past decade.

It's An Expiring Deal
And West is a free agent. Boston and West don’t really have to give us anything.

Well
I really don’t think we’ll keep him. Hopefully we pawn him off to somebody who wants an expiring
why sign West just to get an expiring?
must be getting something besides just Avery

Happy For West
My favorite Hornet ever. It’s bittersweet. I hope he succeeds in Boston although… does that mean Garnett’s playing Center? We’ll see. Maybe they’re doing this to lure Chris Paul over as well (just a joke… I think). Either way, I wish West all the best and I sure hope he has a lot of success in Boston.

People,
This is a good move. Expiring contracts = Gold for small market, rebuilding teams.
Although … wonder how this affects the ability to move CP3 still…
fine
No problem here. Thanks and best wishes to West.
O’Neal is gimpy with past injuries, but we can trade him and if not, he can still actually play.
Just wanted to add that I really like Avery Bradley. As a some sort of stop gap only, but he has the right attitude and is somebody to cheer for.
But didnt DWest and Kevin Garnett not get along at all?
but west wants a championship
also check out the trade i put together on trade machine its in the fan posts
About The Trade?
I’m not surprised. I always felt West was gonna leave just because I always knew CP3 was gonna leave

I would respect these guys a little more
..if they had been committed to winning championship in New Orleans…everybody wants to play for a championship, but there is only one champion each year. I love DW and CPIII but am frankly a little disappointed in their bail-out approach.
On the other hand, what we really need is an owner like San Antonio has who can convince players that it is possible to build a championship team in a market other than the East or West Coast.

the thing with san an is that
they got lucky enough to have an injured DRobinson season and lucked into the tim duncan pick. with out timmy and then manu and tony picks that team would be about what the hornets are at. It is skill in the draft that keeps san an always near the top
Agree mostly
..but the lack of an owner is hurting us badly right now….One of my points was that somehow San An was able to hang onto its marquee players rather than have them bail for more “glamorous” markets.

Can somone educate me
I thought sign and trades were a thing of the past under the new cba….I assume that since West is a free agent, the only reason he would do a sign and trade would be that the Hornets can pay him more than Boston could offer outright…If that is the case, does it have any impact on Hornets cap room.
Sorry, but I am not a capologist, although I wish I were

Sign and trades were kept in the new CBA.
West’s salary in such a scenario wouldn’t count against Hornets, but any new players brought in would.

totally bummed!!!
what?!
Why?!
NO way!
Absolute denial.
Cannot be.
only good news
…is that by signing with the Raptors, we won’t hear Graymonster say he wanted to play for a championship contender

doesnt this team have like ten centers?
are we expecting trades here or what?
how many canter can a team have…and all that specialize in second string!????
must be like a tag team center combo plan here…
Maybe we can trade one of the draft picks we are supposed to get...
to Toronto for (wait for it)…Aaron Gray

My hope would be that Okafor is moved in the trade. Just so the team can completely rebuild without any large contracts tying up cap space.
by njennings on Dec 10, 2011 4:12 PM CST via mobile reply actions
looks like..
The league made it known that to be approved, hornets would have to get younger talent or more draft picks… I’m all for that, and if we could shed Okafors contract it would be incredible… Just hope there’s a legit big man still available to sign.

Ehhhh
Considering we’re probably gonna be average next year… I don’t want to bring any old stop gaps on the team. Never been a real Dalembert guy either so maybe I’m the wrong to ask.

Deandre Jordan?
I haven’t heard anything about him getting signed. We’d have to throw a lot of money at him to keep LAC from not just matching.

Is looking to pay him after missing out on Tyson Chandler. He’s an interesting player for sure, though.

best comment on this trade...
I read a post earlier, and its a great reason why the original trade was bad for us, and good move by stern to veto… If we get aging guys scola and odom, we are fringe playoff team, get beat out early, and have a weak draft pick… But if we can get good picks, a team w players like austin rivers and harrison barnes will compete for years.

The Deal
Is still supposed to be the same. I’m with you in that I’d rather be really great or really bad (I don’t cringe when I think of the 2004/2005 season as much as I cringe when I think of 2008/2009) but if the team wants to try and remain competitive, I guess I won’t complain too much. It’s just their philosophy to try and remain relevant. Whether it’ll work or not remains to be seen, though.

good point
I suppose I can’t complain too much with a team that makes the playoffs every year, but its true you don’t generally find good talent in the 15th-20th spot in the draft. Jeeez I’m gettin tired of checkin my phone, when will the trade details come out!?

draft picks... bleh
Draft picks are no longer the way to quickly build a contending team. Players are coming out younger and younger and there are less and less impact players coming out of the draft.
Look at last years draft. Derrick Favors, Demarcus Cousins and Evan Turner were top picks and they are promising players, but it will take several years for them to mature and it’s still uncertain. This year’s rookie crop is considered weak as well with few impact players — that is the reality these days.
Harrison Barnes?? Austin Rivers?? Barnes averaged 13 points per game last year in college as his shot came and went while he was in college. How do you think he would be doing in the NBA?
If we rebuild primarily through draft picks, be prepared to wait until 2015 until we are competitive again.
On the other hand, Martin is possibly the best overall shooter in the NBA who has proven he can score 20-25ppg consistently, Scola and Odom are 18ppg and 10rpg easy given minutes. All three could make All-Star team in a good year.
Further, once young unproven rookies hit the NBA, their trade value immediately plummets. Other than DeMarcus Cousins, few of last year’s rookie’s have major trade value at the moment.
Not so for the 3 players were were supposed to get. A number of teams would give an arm and a leg to complete their roster with one of those 3. Oh, and that’s not talking about the fact that we were also going to get Knicks’ NEXT YEAR’s first rounder on top of those 3.
People need to start understanding the reality.
well..
You should understand the reality that a core of scola, odom, and martin will not compete for anything. Martin is a very valuable asset, no doubt. The other 2? Couple guys over 30 who avg around 16/8 for their career. And the draft class this year has already been considered very strong. Sure anytime u bank on the draft it takes more years, the difference is after a few years w those vets all you have left is old men.
by aburton531 on Dec 10, 2011 10:50 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
rookies
How many of next years drafted players do you expect to average 16/8 over their careers?
Yeah, two of those guys are slightly over 30, but they won’t be playing for us for a decade. In fact, they are around or very close to their prime.
And NO would be immediately competitive with them and probably a playoff team. Rebuilding through the draft could land us in the lottery for several years and trust me, losing gets old in a hurry.
Best case scenario is we would land somebody who would eventually develop into someone like a CP or say, Kevin Durant. That’s hardly a given considering that players like that are once every few years. And even in that best case scenario, guess what? CP3/Durant led teams took a few years to begin to become competitive. Are you sure you will still be a big fan of NO basketball come 2015/2016 after a few woeful losing years under your belt?
Losing gets especially old
for a fleeting fanbase. Quite likely, I’d expect the city to lose the team…
if that's what you like
If you want to have a team capable of making playoffs, but no legit shot at winning a championship, then sure that’s your move. Know that your team can squeak in the playoffs for the next few years, all the while not getting any good drafts picks to continue improving your team… This is what we have done for years, and our draft picks are quincy pondexter, and look where we are now?
by aburton531 on Dec 11, 2011 11:00 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
Yep
For all those who were happy Stern stepped in and killed the deal, it ended up being even too rich for top dog LA. Now where do we go from here with a disgruntled CP3 and other GM’s fearful of getting involved with us when Stern is playing God?
If there was ever time to go into a year long coma, this is it.
Seems like
people are overreacting. Why does everyone act as if the moment the season starts everything freezes and no more trades can be made? ( heard of the Trade Deadline?!?)
Stern did what any half-wit owner in the same position would’ve done for the best long-term interests of his team. Did it screw over the Lakers (yes, but screw them anyways) and does it appear sketchy to the rest of the League (yes… )? These questions aren’t our concern. Acting as the owner of the hornets, Stern killed a deal that was IMHO the 3rd best deal that had been floated anyways.
Instead of taking on the Celts and getting 1 legit All star who is YOUNG (rondo) plus picks, or taking the Clips non-Gordon offer of DJordan and Bledsoe (Both young as well), we take the trade that gives us a bunch of overpaid mediocre vets. Yes I’m aware that you can then turn around and flip someone like Lamar Odom … but the same reason he’s unattractive to us are the saem reasons most potential trade partners will be scared away. And to top it off, having that trade go through would’ve met that for the time being we would’ve fielded a half-decent team … which is good if you’re trying to sell the team ASAP since it makes for a good sales pitch (hey! we’re a 7 seed playoff team!) but bad for the ULTIMATE, Eventual outcome for the franchise in the long-term (hey! we’re never going to be better than a 7 seed and don’t have any youth or flexibility!).
It seems like Demps just went for sheer “value” and tried to get the most basketball talent in return for CP3 that he could. Which is a great short-term move, but it’s also the type of dumb long-term move that kills franchises. To rebuild in the NBA as a small market team you gotta build through smart drafting. Is drafting an exact science? Hell no. But what choice do we have? The events of the past few seasons have shown without a doubt that most star Free Agents covet big media markets and glamour teams. What are you gonna do about it? What is fielding a team of Scola-Martin-odom/west/etc – types going to do for us? That’s not how you get to the top… ANd i hope for everyone’s sake here that the management isn’t just aiming for permanent Milwaukee Bucks-land. That’s purgatory. You take your chances and you take the risks that may have big rewards and hope you wind up building an OKC or a San antonio.
All that being said, latest rumors are of the Clips once again being in the lead. I see no reason why trade talks can’t continue even as the season gets under way, and if we can somehow get Gordon from them plus the 1st rounder from Minn that they have, I think that’s a Fantastic potential scenario for us. And as for the current roster of D-league types, well, it’ll be tough to watch but at least they can easily tank and set us up for another lottery pick. And really, that’s the only viable course I see right now.
100% agree
This is the best perspective throughtout the whole scenario.
