A Bored Chris Paul (Gross Speculation On a Player's Attitude and Motivation)
So I'm online taking care of some job paperwork ... checking the Hornets blogs occasionally on quick breaks and I got to thinking about the team and Paul's play.
Disclaimer:
Now before I go on I understand that this is pure speculation but it seemed an interesting line of thought ... of course usually when I comment it's like I'm on Pluto ... so maybe it's just interesting for me.
Also this is my first fan post.
Anyway I'm thinking injury notwithstanding, Paul's recent play may be out of boredom. I think he is bored with and frustrated by this Hornets team. I personally feel like Paul is the best player in the league despite Love's production this year and the Lebron James. I feel like he's smarter. Smarter than any player in the league.
So I feel like a successful team with Paul as point guard understands that he is the smartest guy in the game and builds a team for Chris Paul. Paul controls the team on the court and wins games not by taking over individually but by controlling the game completely.
If during crunch time Paul is taking over games and teams are playing that, eventually it becomes 5 on 1. And Paul can win games like that depending, on the game situation and the team, but so can any of the top talent in the league and if I'm Paul that doesn't feel like the height of basketball. Or at least the height of Chris Paul basketball.
My feeling is that Paul would rather not win games by getting in pissing contests with the other stars in the league over single handed wins but instead he wants to dominate the league by controlling the basketball game whenever he is on the court.
It must be lousy for your options to be run a play for Ariza or Smith or Green or Belinelli, run one for West (again) or make the play yourself. I feel like Paul would rather have to make a play himself as a last option. But who else is making plays consistently on the team? West and the still adjusting not-quite-yet-a-go-to-offensive-option Okafor (I feel there is still some improvement left in his game playing with Paul. He's a very smart player) are it. Everyone else seems not smart or talented enough or willing to adjust their game to play with Paul.
I feel like the team needs more talent definitely, but whoever is playing needs to understand Chris Paul basketball and be able to play it. West needs to be double teamed to be stopped (works depending) and Okafor outsized (but I think he can develop in dealing with that) but everyone else is shooting themselves (and the team) in the foot through a lack of talent or smarts.
I'm with Paul, why shouldn't he be able to depend on his SF or SG to make the play when he has read the other team and created the situation for them to make it?
Anyway, I'm not putting this out there like I'm backing it up with stats and whatnot (PURE SPECULATION). It's done more on a gut feeling, my general belief that Paul is basketball god and for just a general discussion to cast the so called Paul "4th Quarter collapse" in a different light.
Thanks for reading.

I think
I think CP is just not 100%. He had to wear the knee brace and now that he’s taken it off, he may not be completely sure of himself. It’s somewhat understandable if that is the case.
That’s why others have to try to step it up.
Yeah,
but I think he could shoot a three without putting his knee in jeopardy. It seems kind of odd that so many games have seemed to come down “Why didn’t Chris Paul step up?” and “He goes hard from tip-off but disappears in the fourth quarter! What’s going on?”
I figure Paul being less aggressive and taking fewer risks to protect his body is one thing, Paul playing the wall while other guys try to get to get the job done during a specific part of the game repeatedly throughout the season is another thing.
Like I said it’s not like I have some numbers or quotes or special knowledge on meniscus tears (and specifically Paul’s) to back this up but have I missed the interviews where Paul or anyone is citing his recovery from injury as a factor in his fourth quarter vanishing act?
Regardless, to me he seems to be missing a fire that he had in his first few seasons and I’m not totally convinced the injury is what put it out. (but maybe next season proves me wrong)
This season
we’ve seen Paul hesitate on more shots than most players do for an entire career. Reason I don’t feel it’s boredom (or anything resembling it) is because you can see the angst on his face when things don’t work out – especially him missing shots, etc. Also, I’ve read enough excerpts by beat writers to know he’s taking it very personally when they’ve seen him sit at his locker for lengthy periods or just not appear as positive as he once was.
I’m almost certain it’s the knee. CP3 still moves around relatively well but you can tell he’s not as “bouncey” as he used to be. I remember when the kid dunked on Dwight Howard but now he doesn’t even dunk it when he’s alone on a breakaway. He’s always looking all around when he’s on the perimeter and if a guy makes a move towards him when he gets into shooting position (even if he’s 5 feet away), CP3 refuses to put it up.
MY THEORY: Seems semi-apparent to me CP3 dealing with physical limitations for such a long time now that it’s also affected his confidence and thus his once impenetrable decision-making. My thinking is that Monty saw this in preseason (or CP3 came up to him) and they decided to have him play off the ball more. I’m sure they figured they would have had the ability to go to CP3 god-mode at some point in the season. The fact CP3 is still having problems coming through with more regularity of late is apparent he’s not any better than he was at the start of the year. Hope it does fall into place sometime before the playoffs, but my guess is CP3 of old won’t be back until next season or if at all. His knee has probably deteriorated so much that his only option is now to re-invent himself.
Not Sure If I Fully Agree
Going into the season, I felt this argument would be prevalent and, not only that, it would affect the Hornets for the majority of the regular season. But after I watched the start of the season and saw how well Chris Paul played, I’m not sure if I fully agree. Paul came into this season playing fantastic basketball and only tailed off about a month or so ago. I think the pace and his knee injury have really affected his play and I still think those are the big problems.
When I mention his knee injury, I don’t mean it in the sense that he’s crippled and can’t do anything. I mean it in the sense that he’s having to adapt his game to accomodate for that and not take as many chances, therefore risking further injury. He’s played in every game this year but it’s obvious that he hasn’t played at a high level in all of them. I’m still that idiot who thinks that Paul’s pacing himself for the postseason and that he’ll eventually play better when the playoffs ask him to. But Paul’s lack in production happened when Okafor wasn’t able to attract attention in the paint for him. I don’t think that’s coincidence.
Just like West has played more outside-in than inside-out after the back injuries, I think Paul is just altering his game to accomodate for the knee injuries. I don’t think it has anything to do with him not caring.
"You play to win the game."
My opinion is somewhat like mr wayne keller
I think it is partially injured knee and worrying about not hurting it again and having to miss a lot of time. I also think that monty might have taken a little bit of the control out of paul’s hands witht his slow paced game. Yes it paul can control the time but it takes a little bit of the play making away because he has to create through set plays instead of creating through fastbreaks and runouts. By having those fast breaks secondary players get easier baskets which makes it easier on paul. Instead paul has to walk it up the defense gets set which means paul has to create the missmatches instead of the offense creating missmatches putting even more pressure on paul and givien those secondary guys a harder shot.
Great piece
But let’s think back to 07-08. Was the team really more talented then? West is playing better basketball this season in my opinion. Tyson Chandler is playing great with Dallas, but in New Orleans he couldn’t stay on the floor. Pargo = Jack. Peja was the same story as Tyson, and Beli has been hot lately. Butler had a much better shot than Ariza has, but Ariza is money on defense.
But the credit I give to you for the post is: what if Chris feels like he needs a fresh start? I really think CP is better and smarter than Melo and Lebron, who think they own the world. CP won’t hold the league hostage (ESPN may make it seem that way, though). I’m just worried if his play doesn’t improve, he may feel that he needs a fresh start. And low and behold, 2 seasons from now, the knee will be fully healed, and coincedence will kick in and make his play better no matter where he ends up.
For right now and hopefully for the future, CP says “We have the best coaching staff in the league.” I think he feels challenged and not bored. But physical limitations are playing an issue.
Reppin' the Lafayette Hornets fans.
We are in Trouble
I agree with Ryan. Last year before injury Paul was awesome. At different times he played with Hilton Armstrong, Mo Pete, Devin Brown and Sean Marks. 1/3 of our roster isnt even in the league anymore. With Paul’s injury or lack of confidence we can’t score anymore. We needed an upgrade at the 4/5 but not at expense of losing our third best shooter. Chris Paul is too proud a player to be playing at this mediocre level. He gets his steals but guards are lighting him up. You can’t tell me that Douglas and Calderon (Toronto guy) are any good. Did you see Chris Paul at the All-Star game? He sucked at the skills challenge. Something is wrong. If it does come down to having to trade him I hope we can get a Deron Williams package but at this juncture I don’t think so.
I'm not ready to go here
Knee injuries are tricky and in many cases, a player doesn’t get back to his old way until 2 years after the injury. I’m thinking CP3 will regain more of his explosiveness by the time next season rolls around. Either way, we shouldn’t deal him now. It’d be selling low so have to wait to next season regardless.
agreed
i still think if we could give him like 3 or four days in a row off he might feel better, also we will not trade him because right now he is the team, unlike dwill in utah sloan was the team and they also had two perenial allstars in milsap and al jefferson
