The Butterfy Effect - David West

I'm going go in depth on how this David West injury could alter the future of the Hornets Franchise, and possibly the league.  This injury could have profound implications.

butterfly effect(the phenomenon whereby a small change at one place in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere, e.g., a butterfly flapping its wings in Rio de Janeiro might change the weather in Chicago
  • (1.   Chris Paul.  Imagine that D-West stays healthy, the Hornets grab the 6th seed in the West, win their first round series against the Mavs, and give a strong showing against the Lakers in round 2.  This could completely change CP's felling towards the organization.  Chris Paul wants to win, and that is his only priority in this league.  A first round series win would be a huge confidence booster towards his staying in NOLA.  Now imagine that the Hornets hold on to the 7th seed and get swept by the Lakers in the first round, and blown out along the way.  Chris wants to win, and getting killed by the Lakers in the 1st round is not going to make him very happy.  Remember, the Lakers were on his short list of teams he "demanded" to be traded to this past offseason.  So I'm not saying that CP3 is going to leave if we get beat, but a 1st round win would be a HUGE help to our chances at keeping him.
  • David West.  In case you've forgotten, DX could, and likely will opt out of his contract this coming offseason.  This injury could change that.  His stock could drop because of concerns that he's 100 percent.  So, for the purposes of this post, lets say he does opt out.  His market won't be as good, and the Hornets might re-sign him for a lower price than he'd command of the Nets, or some other suitor at one hundred percent health.  But, it could also force him to not opt out, giving the Hornets a chance to make a run next season, with Davidwanting to prove his worth.  This could put the Hornets in a tough situation, with the core of the team hitting free agency.
  • The Hornets Organization.  The potential of David West and CP3 running out of town has to give Dell Demps nightmares.  This injury has actually has made the chance higher of the Hornets becoming the next Caveliers/Raptors/Jazz.  If the Hornets don't put up a fight these playoffs, and don't win at least ONE seies next year, we could very easily be without David West, and Chris Paul.  Secondly, if we can win the team has a better chance of keeping Paul and West.  Those two are competitiors, and I know for sure David, and probablyCP prefer winning to being in the limelight.  A strong showing this year could build towards the future.  Let's do some imagining again.  D-West opts out of his contract and leaves this offseason, then CP3does the same the next year.  This puts the Hornets (If they re-sign all the coming free agents on this year's roster) with a starting line-up of:
  • PG: Jarrett Jack
Yeah, not so hot.  Especially in the backcourt.  I'll pass.

I don't think these things will happen, but I'm just being realistic here.  This injury could trigger a big change in the NBA world.  Before the Hornets were a good upset pick- deep, at the bigs, with good shooters, and a game-changer in CP3, now the farthest we'll get against Spurs/Lakers/Mavs/Thunder.  Thanks for reading.
