Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Hornets: 93, Mavericks: 92. HORNETS WIN!

It would have been easy to excuse a loss tonight. Facing one of the NBA's best teams with Chris Paul out, one doesn't generally expect victory. Yet with the way the standings are situated, every game has "playoff implications" and every win the Hornets can pick up will be crucial to securing a playoff spot. Thankfully, a game that looked like it might get out of hand early turned into one of the best and most exciting wins all season.

Star-divide

It was an implausible victory, but the Hornets did it through excellent rebounding, solid defense and a bunch of equally implausible made shots. Yet for much of the game it seemed unlikely that the Hornets would be able to get over the hump. Every time the Hornets got close the Mavs would push the lead back to 6 or 8 points. On the other hand, despite the Mavericks pushing the lead to double digits on a couple of occasions, the deficit was never unmanageable. As is usually the case, offense was tough to come by for the Hornets. There was not a lot of movement, and guys like Jarrett Jack, Willie Green and Trevor Ariza all took some pretty poor shots. Yet some of the toughest shots seemed to be the ones that went down, including a Marco Belinelli buzzer beating three at the end of the first half.

It was a physical and chippy game, and became more so quarter by quarter. Shawn Marion got shoved into a cameraman by Marco Belinelli. Brian Cardinal and David West had a momentary pushing match. For whatever reason, there always seems to be a certain energy whenever these two teams play that generally leads to close, hard fought games. The determination was evident even as the game seemed to be winding to a close in the Mavericks favor. Suddenly Jarrett Jack and David West were hitting shots, Tyson Chandler was missing free throws, and the Hornets were winning. This win actually marks the eighth straight over the Mavs in New Orleans Arena.

On to some bullet points:

  • Jarret Jack was the hero tonight.  He was aggressive all game long, and continually called his own number. That's okay, that's who he is, but for much of the game his points total was playing catch-up with his field goal attempts. That changed with an excellent fourth quarter, which culminated in Jack drawing a foul on Jason Kidd out beyond the three point line. Those points gave the Hornets the lead and ultimately the win. Jack finished 21 points (8-19 shooting), 7 assists, 6 rebounds and just 2 turnovers.
  • Carl Landry was one of the many Hornets who got into foul trouble tonight, but when he was on the floor he was stellar. Landry's post offense is a fun thing to watch. He has a bevy of moves that he uses against his defender. Contrary to most reserve big men the Hornets have employed in the past few years, Landry's offensive game has real versatility and polish. Landry finished with 15 points on 7-9 shooting from the field. On the defensive end, he had a little trouble with Dirk, but considering the size difference and Dirk's abilities, there's nothing really to complain about there.
  • David West struggled with his shot for much of the night, but as previously mentioned he came through in the clutch and hit some tough shots to keep the Hornets in the game. He ended up with 16 points on 5-12 shooting, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. A nice game.
  • Marco Belinelli had another great game. He probably should have gotten a few more looks at the basket than he did, considering how well he was shooting. A nice 21 points (including 4-7 from three) and 5 rebounds from Marco.
  • At one point it looked like the speedy guard duo of J.J. Barea and Rodrique Beaubois might be the Hornets downfall. They were both using their speed to get by the Hornets defense, and they were hitting shots. But Beaubois started indulging in shotjackery and silly fouls, and Barea ended up turning over the ball 5 times in just 19 minutes.
  • Dirk Nowitzski had 26 points on 10-18 shooting, but there were long stretches where he didn't seem to contribute much.
  • Tyson Chandler won the Chandler vs. Okafor battle pretty handily. 16 points on 5 field goal attempts (ridiculous) and 13 rebounds for the former Hornet. Okafor played fairly well, but was limited by foul trouble.
  • As Rohan mentioned in the game thread, the Hornets did an excellent job on the defensive glass tonight. They collected 90% of the Mavericks misses. West, Ariza, Jack, Okafor, Belinelli and Landry all contributed to a great night on the glass.
  • It was a hell of a game. Enjoy the win everyone.

Actually

If you include the 2008 playoff series, and I will, the Mavericks have lost 11 straight in the New Orleans Arena.

Serious

That’s a great stat

Even more awesome

because I can’t stand the Mavs. Incredible win. Still can’t believe they pulled that off. Hugely important to get a win and keep treading water with Chris out.

Nice recap Caleb

Agreed on the point about Barea and Beaubois.. I thought we were pretty much done when they started taking over and pushed the lead to double digits in the third. What a comeback.

And those

missed Tyson Chandler free throws were awesome. I want him to succeed everywhere except against us. It was funny to see Chris Paul talking YELLING trash talk at him as Tyson tried to collect himself after bricking the first FT.

Man

I want to see that. Tyson got a nice cheer when he was announced, but after he yelled (after going 1/2 on dunks) he heard it from the fans. A steady chorus of boos followed him and came to a crescendo when he was shooting (and missing) those FTs.

by Will H. on Mar 9, 2011 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I noticed he went real over the top on that second dunk attempt. Obviously it’s who he is I guess, but I can’t imagine that went over well haha

No that don't go over too well...

any love we have for you as a former player goes out the window when you start all that trash talking and showboating. LOL!!

I think

I think Tyson still had a bit of a grudge when the Hornets tried to trade him in mid-season. And eventually, we did succeed in trading.

So it’s somewhat nuderstandable. But of course, I was rooting for the Hornets and not Tyson so was glad he missed the 2 free throws.

Screw Tyson

He earned my disgust tonight. I just wish one of our bigs would foul him hard and shut him up.

by CP3forMVP on Mar 9, 2011 11:21 PM CST up reply actions

Hey now.

Love Tyson still. But, of course, more love those missed FTs.

Saw you noted in the other thread that this feels like a genuine rivalry

Totally agree. Between the bad blood created in ‘07-’08 and Tyson/Peja heading over there, it’s really a great matchup

WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great recap. Still speechless. Won’t mention refereeing.

by m-W on Mar 9, 2011 11:08 PM CST reply actions

I will. It sucked. Not Rutgers bad. But bad.

Evens Itself Out

Hornets got screwed out of a couple of games due to bad calls by the ref (the Phoenix game with the non-goaltending call for Thornton comes to mind) so I think these kinds of things even out. Given the way the teams were pushing eachother around (or the Hornets were pushing the Mavericks around I guess) it had to be tough for the refs to call it.

That Rutgers game was awful though. They screwed them out of call, after call, after call, after call to end the game. I have no idea how they missed either a travel, a stepping out of bounds or how nobody noticed there were 2 seconds left in the game when both of those calls were happening.

Isn’t this the same league that got mad at a male cheerleader for throwing the ball in the air even though it landed in the same spot and did nothing to jeopardize the game? But they can’t get THAT correct? How sad.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Mar 9, 2011 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

Never evens out.

That is the bullshit Stern spits. People look at box scores, and see a bunch of meaningless fouls called, but fail to compare that to the other team getting penalty time touch fouls on loose ball fouls, generating easy, free points.

People can debate whether tonight the refs tipped things (many think the crazy comeback would have been unnecessary but for the refs), and, it’s not just proper to complain about refs in losses—indeed, it is more important to talk about it when you win, because the bias is less; but, refs can absolutely affect the outcome.

If by “evening out,” you mean over a season, that’s bullshit, because each game should be correctly called. Plus, plenty of teams get better calls (Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, and Knicks) and plenty others get screwed (rest).

by m-W on Mar 10, 2011 12:26 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I Didn't Either

At least not enough to be cussing and whatnot over it.

officiating was ok

That Willie Green running 3-pointer though was RIGHT on the margin though. He either made it or missed it by 0.0001 of a second. It was too hard to tell.

Also

How huge did that Belinelli half court shot end up being??

by Rohan on Mar 9, 2011 11:10 PM CST reply actions

Huge

but also evened out the many missed FTs by guys that will usually nail them (West, Belly).

by Will H. on Mar 9, 2011 11:12 PM CST up reply actions

I'm really hoping DX's free throws stabilize soon

Obviously 81% is awesome from your PF, but he hasn’t shot this poorly since 2004-2005

Things I noticed

1. This was an emotional win. Chris Paul out gets JJack fired up. Players having shoving matches like a playoff game. Crowd going nuts. The Tooth so upset when fouling out. JJack’s stone cold free throws. Monty’s reaction after the win. I loved what I saw. This team wants to win and wants to be better than a 7 seed. This team doesn’t want to just fight for the playoffs. (also, memphis lost tonight!!!)
2. I really really liked the Bee Zanies.
3. Marco was absurd tonight. Not only was his half-court heave awesome, but the scramble for the ball resulting in a fading-right three point shot in the 4th was absolute money. Please make Beli-heads for the playoffs.
4. I enjoyed the return of the pregame comparison chart and the pregame moment of zen.
5. Players of the game: 1. JJack for being clutch. 2. Marco for bringing offense. 3. Tyson Chandler for blocking Trevor Ariza’s 3-pt attempt at the end of the 4thresulting in a pass to JJack, who then got fouled. Thanks Tyson!

just watched highlights

and have to correct myself.

The blocked shot led to Marco’s drive & miss, which led to the Mek and-one layup. maaa badddd

and things I noticed

Willie Green is painful to watch when he is cold from the field..he is also living proof why the term combo guard is an oxymoron
Ariza also is a hideous shooter, except when he is not(although love his defense)
Jack is a bulldog
Aaron Gray could use a few more minutes
DWest seems to have abandoned his 18 foot jumper
Belinelli is playing with a lot more confidence
Landry is a bull and a great addition
Okafor is a versatile, very versatile, defender

Amazing that Hornets won last night…a truly great and needed win..Team sum was much greater than individual parts

by BenDerDonDat on Mar 10, 2011 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

it was one of Willie's worse shooting nights

Several of his shots were airballs or way off. But that running 3-pointer at the end of the 3rd was pretty sweet. Too bad it was waved off—but it could have gone either way.

by MZURK on Mar 11, 2011 12:51 AM CST up reply actions

Good stuff

And #5! Yes…. so glad that happened. We know that 3 wasn’t going in.

I'm also loving the trend of Beli taking those deeep threes

Opponents don’t expect it at all and they leave him open, and he has more than enough range to drain those consistently.

reminds me of the

reminds me of the announcer’s comment a couple of day’s ago – it might have been Stacey King – who said that Belinelli looks similar to a young Sylvester Stalone.

It was quite funny comment.

I'll admit

I had threw in the towel with like a minute to go and as soooooonnnnn as I stated I was “tired of losing like this” Beli hit that first 3 and we started coming back. I was glad I didn’t turn the channel all together cuz i would have missed a great comback.

" I’ve never done drugs but I think watching Matty Ice stare blankly towards the field as Drew Brees kneels down while clock hits zero in a playoff game would be like doing cocaine off a strippers @$$#….yeah that good.
