Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

The Big Gray Monster and his Career Night

Before the season began, how many of you thought that Aaron Gray's status for a playoff game would be a noteworthy ESPN headline that you wouldn't have to go sifting through their website to find? Sure enough, it currently sits in plain sight on ESPN's NBA homepage, which in itself is a huge testament to the game that Gray played on Sunday afternoon against the Lakers. Though his season high of 12 points certainly played a major part in calling his game a success, it was the little things that helped the Hornets to a game one victory in Los Angeles. If the Big Gray Monster (BGM) is able to do make a similar impact on future games while staying out of foul trouble, the Hornets will be able to counter the Lakers' size much more effectively than anyone could have predicted, and will therefore make this series a much more winnable one for New Orleans.

Star-divide

So, what were these "little things" that made Gray so much more effective on Sunday? One has to be his improved endurance, exemplified by consistently running the floor. Another is the discipline he utilized to stay out of foul trouble with Okafor glued to the bench for that very reason. Important as these may be, I have listed my three most essential keys to the Big Gray Monster's game 1 performance below.

1. Knack for establishing deep position inside.  Rohan touched on this point in his game recap on Sunday night, and it is one that cannot possibly be understated. It would be easy to give all the credit for Gray's offensive production to the Hornets' point guards; Chris Paul brilliantly assisted four of BGM's five made shots, and Jack assisted the other. However, there was much more to his 12-point night than excellent point guard play. Aside from the absurd 16-foot baseline jumper he nailed, Gray may not have seen any of those passes come in from Paul or Jack without excellent positioning. Aaron was consistently able to plant himself deep within the paint, allowing him to basically just catch the ball and dunk it every time the ball came his way. The only way this is possible is through relentless effort and strength, so Gray deserves a ton of credit for creating those opportunities for himself so frequently.

2. Ability to finish looks. Countless times this season, we have seen Gray receive the ball near the rim and go up with it weakly, resulting in either a missed shot or a miss and a foul (followed by free throws that he often misses). Because of his poor free throw percentage, it is even more important for BGM to be able to finish around the rim. At long last, Gray came through in this regard, ironically doing so against one of the toughest teams in the paint in the entire league. Though frequently contested, BGM never backed down from the challenge; only once did a foul stop him from scoring, making each of his 5 official attempts which included two "and-ones" (both of which he converted). Excellent determination from Aaron throughout the game to make sure he made every shot count.

3. Strong post defense. The fact that Gray's game is praise-worthy despite only collecting one rebound (normally his best skill) is a tribute to just how well he played in almost every other area, especially defensively. This may sound strange, but it seemed to me like Gray finally started to use his size to his advantage on defense, not just his strength. One play in particular sticks out in my mind in this regard. Matched up one-on-one against Pau Gasol, the Lakers' all-star forward faced up against Gray from a little outside the low block. Gray played a little bit off of him, forcing Gasol to either A) back him down or B) take a jump shot/pass the ball. Gray effectively used his size and width to destroy any hopes of maneuvering around him, while still standing close enough to contest a shot with his 7 foot height and long arms. Gasol ended up deciding that Gray's strength was too much to handle, settling for a jumper that missed fairly badly. If the BGM can keep playing this kind of defense and show the ability and discipline to stand his ground, not only will he be more effective, but he'll also increase the likelihood that he stays out of foul trouble. Gray's defense on Sunday was almost as important as his offense, and the Hornets will need every bit of it in the coming games to keep the Lakers' big men off-balance.

Hopefully, this has been an appropriate shout-out to Aaron Gray, because after Sunday, the man certainly deserves it. Hornets fans everywhere are keeping their fingers crossed that the swelling in his ankle goes down enough to enable him to play on Wednesday night. No matter how many more games we see the Big Gray Monster play this season, he has already made a bigger impact on this series than any of us could have hoped, becoming a key contributor to a Hornets road playoff victory. Thanks for stepping up, Mr. Gray.

Sobering up....

2 days after ONE of our biggest wins in franchise history(based on reg season games and lack of Hornet’s personnel), I took off the rose-colored glasses and saw Hornets up 1-0 in the "first" playoff game of the post-season….. Seeing CP3 do what he did was great and I know he’s gonna do more of the same since he saved his body during the reg season. The question is with the personnel we have, can they REALLY step up when CP3’s shots aren’t falling? I REALLLLLLLLLLy hope so…. I know D Anderson will have to be a good option with his outside scoring ability not to mention his height. If Gray is able to play, I hope its Saturday being that he’s a "big boy" and realistically needs the time/weight off his ankle. The lakers are going to be ready Wed because of all the negative hype Gasol has gotten and I just hope we play a good game.

Lastly….. I’m kind of getting tired of reading articles on the net like the Hornets are a Div II college team playing the world champs and we’ll be satisfied with that "one" game. A good game Wed followed by a win at home will remind the world, we were once a feared team not too long ago.

2 personal fouls in 20 minutes

deserves a round of applause (for a guy averaging over 6 fouls per 36 minutes). Really hoping that at worst he misses one game due to the ankle. I’d prefer none, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he misses game 2 where the Lakers will likely be a pack of hungry wolves. That way he can come back in Game 3 and offset the Laker mentality of stealing the first one at our place.

Gray will play Wednesday

This according to a friend who watched First Take this morning on ESPN. Jack did a phone interview and said that Gray told him last night that he was going to play in Game 2.

Thats great

if its true. Like CP3 said at the end of the game we need him. I really think he’s the best defender we have for LA bigs. He has enough height and weight to challenge both gasol and bynum down low. In my opinion, i think that Mbenga/Gray and Landry/Gray combos did well defensivly than when Mek was on the floor. Did Monty ever try the Gray/Oak combo in game 1? I can’t remember.

Mbenga/Gray

Is an offense-crippling combo, so we really can’t rely on them to be played together at all. As for Gray/Okafor, I’ll bet Monty would have liked to use it, but I don’t think it happened for any extended period of time thanks to Oak’s foul trouble.

Mbenga/Gray may be offensivly horrible

but you gotta Mbenga props for the fade away jumper before the shot clock buzzer over Bynum. LOL

soon...maybe....

but damn it…we do not need him to be THE offense.
We need him to allow our offense. We need him to give the opposition the chance he score and keep them honest.

But I am telling you…Gray can score.
He will grow into a big time (back up) center and give you a decent 10 to 15 minute games.
Conidance.
THIS comes with experience and you soon will see Gray begin shooting short outside sets.
I mentioned in an earlier blog, IF I was Monty, I would get him summer shooting coaching and get him to do it and BELIEVE in himself.
NBA skill is a long earned development and these big men develop in their 5 year and beyond.

I remember when the Bulls traded Miller! I screamed! Are they Nuts!? This guy will develope. Let him develop.
Boy…were they wrong!

Um confidance. Sorry.

You guys understand I am working with half a brain, right?
It truly sucks to be half witted.

I was really impressed when Aaron

decided to pull the trigger on a short jumper in the 1st quarter and hit nothing but net. I agree that he probably possesses a better short range game than most give him credit for.

Even so

I never want to see him take that shot again unless there’s 5 seconds or less on the shot clock. lol.

Haha

Yeah same with Mbenga’s little fadeaway as well!

It reminded me of the Willie Mays Hayes basket catch

in Major League, when Lou Brown (manager) says to him as he comes back into the dugout “Nice catch, don’t ever f***ing do it again!”

Gray Was Terrific

And he justified why so many of us wanted him to see extended minutes all season long. One thing we should all commend Gray for is just his attentiveness. Let’s face it, all season he’s been in and out of the rotation without a well defined role yet when he’s called on in the postseason, he steps up against the two time defending champions and plays the best game of his career. You don’t just step into that by accident. That’s a lot of hardwork and preparation and I’m happy for him.

BOW TO THE GRAY MONSTER

GRAY MONSTER STRIKES FEAR IN THE HEARTS OF LITTLE ANDREW BYNUM AND PUNY STICK FIGURE PAU GASOL!

by biggraymonster on Apr 19, 2011 3:59 PM CDT reply actions

um...hello

ppellico here.

frim the very first posting and onward against many a gray naysarer, I tried to point out Gray’s position and importance to this team.
Never one to believe he would be a starter, as it was/is my personal opinion it takes longer to get these monsters into NBA stars.
However I have always, even to the point of being accused of being a troll and “off subject”, I tried to explain Grays gift inside on defense and offense. How he set up the safety zone from which his shooters found santuary.
His pics are the best on the team, perhaps simply due to his size. But size does matter, boys, and you have to give that to the guy as much as you give speed to others.
How early I warned of his benching in favor of MBenga was costly. Not only to the team, but Gray’s development as a player…and a confidant teammate who felt a part.

It was and is my opinion this team would have been a better team with a better ecord had Gray been given his opportunities since day ONE.
People talk about his being out of shape as IF he was a slouch! Damn it, I just WISH some of these cowardly voices would suffer such a broken foot and then try to compete at an NBA level.
Idiots all.

Thank god for the majority on this sight that allowed me to vent and even agreed and pushed along with me…complaining as well that Monty was using Gray, and other bench players, wrongly.

Good for you, big guy!
You earned this short 15 minutes of fame. But get ready. The Fickled Finger of Fan will soon be in your eye once again!!!

i just wonder

if he plays tonight will the lakers be trying to bang at him esspecially bynum

by sd3 on Apr 20, 2011 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

They know his historical foul rate

They’ll attack him constantly. Hopefully he can remain as disciplined as he was on Sunday night (though based on past history, I’m not optimistic)

I'm not buying on either Gray or D.J. - Pau has a history of disappearing & coming back almost entirely on his own, rather than thru the efforts of others

I’m really worried about all of the negative attention Pau’s gotten, it enhances the probability that he wakes up – & let’s face it, well, it’s my opinion, Pau Gasol is a perennial All Star who sometimes disappears due to himself rather than through the efforts of others (ESPN). I loved the efforts of Mbenga/Gray in Game 1, but can’t force myself to drink this Kool-Aid.

I just see Pau as substantially more likely to be “my head’s in the game now” Pau, rather than “my head’s not in the game” Pau.

I forecast that Mbenga/Gray are skunked by Pau and Bynum, but hold out hope that Kobe reverts to a volume-scoring form, our guardplay stays superior, and really, just CP3, can carry us through to a win in the series. Go Hornets!

What Does

Gasol’s performance have to do with how Gray played?

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Apr 19, 2011 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess there is a reason they've been low subs for most of their careers?

So what Kool-Aid are we talking here? That they dominate the paint on both ends of the floor? Positive none of us here think that will happen. All we need is for them to hold their own by rebounding, defending, screening and making the occasional bunny.

by RedHopeful on Apr 20, 2011 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

that's what i mean, i can't bring myself to drink the kool-aid that

Mbenga/Gray will hold their own by rebounding, defending, screening. I mean that’s pretty much everything but scoring buckets, so i considered that near-dominant if you’re an undersized sub and playing against the likes of Andrew Bynum & Pau Gasol
