Hornets vs Lakers, game 4
After the Lakers flat out out-muscled us in game 3, the Hornets look to even the series at 2-2 against the Lakers tonight in the Hive. Just like Game 2, the Hornets played a sloppy, disjointed game but still had a chance to win until the middle of the fourth quarter.
5 things that need to happen for the Hornets to win tonight.
I'm not even going to mention CP3 needs to have a monster game, because at this point it's pretty obvious if he doesn't tear everyone apart the Hornets have no shot. So here are 5 OTHER things that need to happen.
#1- Guards not named CP3 need to come to life
Jarrett Jack, Willie Green, and Marco, the spotlight's on you. The three of you were great in game 1 but non-existent in games 2 and 3. Actually, non-existent isn't fair- the three combined for plenty of turnovers and missed jumpers on offense and tons of getting burnt on defense. They went 6 for 21 (0 for 4 from three) in game 2 and 3 of 18 (1 of 7 from three) in game 3. The Hornets are already extremely short on offense, and CP3 is getting them plenty of open looks- if two of these three don't bring their A game tonight and start forcing open jumpers, there is NO way the Hornets will win. If they can hit open jumpers, it will open up the floor for CP3 and the game will start to get real interesting.
#2- Defensive rebounding and inside presence
The Lakers CRUSHED the Hornets on the glass in game 3. Seriously, I feel like every Lakers offensive possession would end with a missed jumper that Odom, Gasol, or Bynum would grab the rebound and then volleyball to themselves over all the Hornets big men before sending home a two hand jam. It's tough for the Hornets bigs- they're clearly outsized by the Lakers bigs, but we just cannot let Gasol and Bynum muscle us around like that. Obviously, it's easier said than done, as these three muscling everyone around is the reason why the Lakers are the two time defending champs, but Mek, Landry, and the gang need to find a way to clean up the glass.
#3- Let the Lakers keep shooting threes
The Lakers shot an uncharacteristic 16 threes in game 3, making 7 of the. Kobe Bryant, in particular, was deadly from long range, going 4 of 7 from deep with several of the makes coming with a hand in his face. Derek Fisher and even Pau Gasol also had dagger three pointers at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters that killed Hornets runs. And you know what- that's ok. If the Lakers want to become a pull up three point shooting team, the Hornets need to let them and thank the gods the Lakers aren't feeding their big men. Not one Laker scares me from deep, and that includes Kobe, who made less than 1/3 of his threes during the regular season. if they want to try to beat us from three, let them.
#4- Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers
The Hornets had 14 turnovers in game 3, 16 in game 2, and 3 in game 1... guess which game they won??? Again, the Hornets have limited offensive firepower, and we can't be giving up our precious possessions by turning the ball over. If the Hornets have double-digit turnovers, there's almost no way they can beat the Lakers.
#5- Ariza, Landry, and Oak- you stay classy
First- big props to Ariza for being a big boy and becoming the only Hornet to rebound in game 3- he had 12. These three combined for 50 points on 18 of 32 shooting... that's phenomenal!!! While I still wish Ariza would cut out the "shot a contested jumper with 18 seconds left on the shot clock routine," the three of them did a great job of attacking the rim, finishing what CP3 started, and just generally doing their part on offense. Once again- the Hornets need offense anywhere they can take it, and we need these guys to score. As a bonus, when they're scoring, it means the Lakers bigs are working on defense and picking up fouls, which limits them offensively!!!
Prediction
The Lakers are six point favorites.... this is the problem with writing a Hornets blog and being a Hornets fan. I know the Lakers will probably cover. I know Beli and Willie need to knock down jumpers for the Hornets to have a shot, and I know that looks real unlikely based on recent history. I know the Hornets are clearly outmatched, and even CP3's brilliance can't overcome constant double and triple teams without some help..... but my heart says the Hornets are going to pull a Rocky tonight and shock the world.... Screw it, I'm going with my heart. Hornets win, and Beli drills 5 threes on 8 attempts.
Hornets 96, Lakers 89
Bonus note- Despite my worries, the crowd was AWESOME in game 3. Yes, there were a few Lakers fans (including one who still had the tags on his Kobe jerset, and three obnoxious, trashy fans in front of me who would do the same annoying "sit down, quiet down" move after every bucket), but the Hornets fans more than made up for it. Let's keep that same energy up tonight and see if we can't cheer our team on to the upset!

My Own Keys To Victory
Sort of similar to your’s, but this will be my last post for the day until the game’s over so I’m going to say it all now.
Hornets got to come out aggressive and play great basketball tonight. It’s probably their last shot at winning a game in this series and they need to feed off the energy of the crowd. Here’s some quick keys to victory.
1) Involve the crowd – On Friday the place was loud, packed to the ceiling and festive. But the play on the court didn’t respond and the fans were quickly taken out of it. You have to stay aggressive, fight for loose balls, go after rebounds, etc. I know it’s tough because of the Lakers size so because of that you have to make all the hustle plays. That’s the only advantage being undersized gives is that you’re quicker. The Hornets have to find a way to at least make use of that.
2) Keep Belinelli on a short leash – I like Marco Belinelli but he’s been so damn awful this series that I’m just about done with him. Start him, of course, and still let him fire up a few shots to start the game. But if he starts playing like he did in Game Three I’d take him out and keep him out. Jarrett Jack is easily the team’s best reserve and second best backcourt player (shudder) and although he and Chris Paul would be very undersized as well, and although Jack would get killed by Ron Artest (not that Belinelli’s doing anything on Artest either), you almost have to do that because Belinelli is giving you nothing on either end. I don’t think Jack will have as bad a shooting game two games in a row but I suppose you can never tell.
3) Stay on Gasol – The Hornets have really done a good job on Pau Gasol; so much so that scoring 17 points in Game Three was deserving of a front page story about how Pau had “shown up” here in the series. Carl Landry’s done fantastic in his one on one defense. You can tell he’s studied the hell out of Gasol and knows his moves and he’s done a great job of anticipating what he’s going to do. But Gasol got going in that last game and a part of me feels that great players just need to find a rhythm. If Gasol did, Hornets may not have a shot. So dedicate your defense to stopping him again and go for it!
4) Stop playing Chris Paul off the ball – Especially when Willie Green is in the game, the Hornets need to stop playing Paul off the ball. Look, I know Paul has to be exhausted. He’s apparently playing with some thumb injury on his left hand as well and I get that it’s been tough having to play 1 on 5 for extended periods of time against the champs. But Paul’s the team’s only hope. It pained me to see him stand in the corner and watch as Willie held onto the ball, looked for his shot and missed wildly. But that’s what he does. That Willie Green that played in Game One that took it to the basket and created plays around there, we don’t see enough of him. The Hornets are intimidated by the Lakers shots but even if they come out and block it, it’s worth at least attempting initially. And Paul’s the only player good enough to penetrate and still create for others outside. He needs to find a way to do it.
5) Make your three pointers – I swear I feel like everyone outside of Chris Paul has made like a combined 2 three pointers since this series started. I know I’m way off on the number, I’m going off feeling. But the Lakers are giving the Hornets open looks; the Hornets just aren’t knocking them down. This all basically goes to Belinelli who has been awful shooting the basketball and to Jack, Green and Ariza, who don’t want to take the corner three’s (which are the only three’s they can hit). But if the Lakers are going to give you shots, for the love of God you have to make them and get some pressure off of Chris Paul. The Lakers are rotating everyone over to him and nobody else can lessen that pressure. If I’m the Lakers, why would I dedicate any time to extensively stopping anyone else? You have to make your three’s and open up the court for the best player on the team to make plays for everyone else.
If the Hornets do these things, it’s a foregone conclusion that they’re going to tie the series up at 2 apiece and go back to Staples. Don’t let this be the last game at the New Orleans Arena this season! Reward those fans for coming out and outyelling the Lakers fans (trust me when I say that, because of Shaquille O’Neal’s stay at LSU and the Hornets not arriving until 2002, Louisiana’s always been a pretty big Lakers state), feed off of that energy and pull off a miracle. We saw it today with Brandon Roy that anything can happen. The bench needs to step up like they did in Game One or the team is toast. Make it happen, boys!
I bee-lieve! Geaux Hornets!

What color jerseys are the Hornets wearing tonight?

Laker fans.
Did anyone see that obnoxious Laker fan sitting courtside in game 3. He had a Black Kobe jersey on, and every time the Lakers hit a shot he’d pull it out like somebody…

I saw one of the ballboys tweeted after Game 3 that that was Chouest’s son…
Maybe it was a bet from a friend
That if the Hornets won game 2 he could wear a Hornets jersey, but if they lost he’d have to wear a Lakers one…maybe…

I was sitting behind him and one section towards the sideline (about 15 rows up in 103). I wanted to walk down there and punch him in the face. So obnoxious… and the worst part was that other Hornets fans were taking it and even high-fiving the guy! Made me so angry.

Think you nailed every point Andrew
Chris Paul should have another 20ish points, but whether he finishes closer to 5 or 15 assists determines this game… and that’s determined by whether Marco, Willie, et al. can knock down the open shots he creates
Hope your prediction is right!

3 point game
and we only had 4 players score in the first quarter. If everyone else steps up we should be good.
CP3 still has to be able to contribute something offensively
it’s his left thumb + he should be able to get floaters in the paint w/o using the left hand. IMO he needs to probably get at least 15ish point.
