Hornets vs Lakers, game 6

The Hornets try to stave off elimination against the Lakers tonight in the Hive. For the Hornets to stand a chance, it all comes down to one player- Chris Paul. When CP3 was other-worldly in games 1 and 4, the Hornets won. When he's merely exceptional (games 2,3, and 5), the Hornets lost. It's really been that simple. The Hornets have already pushed this Lakers team farther than anyone thought they could. For the Hornets to extend this series one more game, Chris Paul needs to go off.

Star-divide

5 keys to the game not relating to Chris Paul

1) Who cut down the Oak?

Remember the movie Space Jam? (That's a rhetorical question, of course you remember the greatest movie of all time). I'm starting to wonder if the aliens sucked the talent out of Emeka Okafor's body before this series. That may sound extreme, but hey, they took Sean Marks talent in the movie, and Oak would certainly be better than him!

For the series, Oak is averaging just 7.4 points per game and barely over 5 rebounds per game. Those are numbers you'd expect a backup center playing ten-fifteen minutes a night to put up, not your starter. In addition, Oak's averaging 2 turnovers and almost 5 fouls per game while constantly getting pushed around by Andrew Bynum. Oak has had his moments- he looked great on defense and the offensive glass in game 4, but they've really been few and far between. For the Hornets to win tonight, Oak needs to provide some offensive value (say, 12 points or so) and keep Bynum from dominating us on the defensive end.

2) Marco Polo

Marco Belineli finally decided to show up in game 5, scoring 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting. The problem with the Hornets all series has been no one not named Chris Paul (and, to some extent, Trevor Ariza) have been able to generate offense, which allows the Lakers to throw double and triple teams CP's way. When Marco hits his shots, it opens up the floor for everyone and really takes the team to a different level offensively.

3) Don't be a hero, Ariza

Look, Ariza's been great this series, and his showing in the first half of game 4 and first quarter of game 5 single handedly kept the Hornets in the games. But there's a darkside to his performance- when Ariza gets hot, he starts putting up "hero" shots... contested jumpers with 18 seconds left on the shot clock, 3 pointers where he hasn't set his feet, turnaround fadeaways that no player on earth can make, etc. Ariza has one skill on the offensive end- driving, slashing, and getting to the hoop. He is a TERRIBLE shooter. Sure, he might get hot sometimes, but on the whole, when Ariza puts up a jump shot, the other team thanks their lucky stars. Ariza needs to stay aggressive on both ends for the entire game and not settle for jump shots.

4) Where's Willie

Willie Green is, admittedly, not my favorite player. Ok, he's my least favorite player on the team by far. But he won several games for the Hornets this year by getting aggressive, ignoring his limitations, and putting the Hornets offense on his back. He's been largely invisible so far this series. The Lakers bench destroyed the Hornets bench in game 5. For that trend to reverse, Willie Green needs to bring his A game.

5) Shut down Ron Artest

The road to beating the Lakers is simple- let Kobe Bryant get his, don't let their three bigs obliterate you, and shut everyone else down. So far this series, Ron Artest has been the only consistent scorer for the Lakers. Has averaging over 13 points and 5 boards per game (versus regular season averages of 8.5 and 3.3), and it seems he beats Beli for an offensive rebound and put back once a half. The man is truly a hulk and a horrible matchup for Beli and Willie, but for the Hornets to win, we need to stop the Lakers role players from beating us, and it starts with stopped Ron-Ron.

Prediction

The Lakers are six point favorites. I was in the Hive Sunday night. The building was electric, and the crowd pushed the team to another level. Sure, CP3 willed the Hornets to that victory, but the crowd was a major factor in that. If this game was on a neutral court, I'd pick the Lakers -12 given the beat down they put on the Hornets in game 5. But it's not. It's in our house, in the Hive, and every Hornet player is going to take it to another level tonight. I just can't see a team as disinterested as the Lakers have appeared at times this series contending with the energy level the Hornets are going to bring... that, and the 5 first half three Beli is about to drop on them.

Hornets 97, Lakers 94

Keys To Victory Tonight

Here are my own keys to victory for the big game and it’s all on the line for the Hornets. The season and the series could both come to an end in the game against the Lakers. Here are my keys to victory for Game Six.

1) Feed off the crowd – The crowd’s going to be fantastic, again, and the Hornets have to feed off of that. The crowd was fantastic in both games in New Orleans and the energy will be there at the start of the game. If the Hornets get off to a hot start like they did in Game Five the place may be ready to storm the court! You have to realize that the Lakers are going to want to close this game out tonight and the crowd won’t rattle them; they’re used to this environment. However the Hornets need their crowd to help them play loose. It could very well be the last home game of the season; lay it all on the line.

2) Keep Marco Belinelli shooting – I know this sounds stupid because he’s had 4 atrocious games and 1 good one but Belinelli is still the only three point option the team has. When he’s making his shots, it really does add a new dimension to the team. Of course, it also leaves him on Ron Artest but it’s not as if Willie Green is going to give you anything substantial in his minutes either. Belinelli has to play good for the Hornets to win tonight.

3) Stop worrying about the refs – I like Emeka Okafor. I really do. But he’s killing me this series. Too often he gets called for ticky tack fouls and he gets upset. I get why he’s upset because I get upset too. He’s left on an island with Andrew Bynum and Bynum is allowed to play physical while Okafor is not. I get why he gets flustered. But he’s letting these officials affect his game. The calls are ruining his aggressiveness and, as a result, the Hornets are getting destroyed on the boards. Carl Landry has always been a horrible defensive rebounder and Aaron Gray is good but in limited minutes. Okafor is, far and away, the Hornets best rebounder and the team needs him in the game. Stop worrying about the referees, stop getting frustrated and play basketball.

4) Make the hustle plays – The Hornets won Games one and Four by attacking the rim and getting second chance points. They need to do the same here in Game Six. Sometimes it’s a size thing, but sometimes it’s an effort thing as well. Not to insinuate the Hornets aren’t trying, but there’s always just an extra step that you should take to get the rebound. Rebounding is mainly about positioning (it’s why someone like Dennis Rodman was so good at it for so long) and technique and the Hornets have to be smarter than the Lakers and fight for those loose balls. The Lakers are bigger. They’re more talented. Therefore you have to be smarter and work harder. It’s an exhausting strategy but it’s essentially the only one you have to be successful.

5) Bail Chris Paul out – I’d imagine Paul’s going to be asked to play 48 minutes and do everything again tomorrow night. Or at least that’s what some people are asking for. I find that unreasonable, but watching the Hornets blow an 8 point lead in about 3 seconds in Game Five when Paul went to the bench doesn’t help out my argument much. Everyone else on the team doesn’t need to play perfect for the Hornets to win, but they at least have to contribute. Trevor Ariza, in particular, has done a good job of spotting the team early while Paul gets a feel for the game and then delivers later. Paul’s been great this whole series and, again, each game rests on his shoulders. But guys like Jarrett Jack have to step up and play great tomorrow. This team has to find a way to keep it close until the 4th quarter and then put the ball in Chris Paul’s hands.

And those are my five keys to victory for the Hornets tomorrow. They seem easy enough to achieve! If only Chris Paul had an ATH account and he could forward this to Monty Williams. If they were to win, Game 7 would be on my 23rd birthday this Saturday. And in game seven, and with that being my birthday, who knows what can happen? This isn’t the first time the Hornets have been written off in this series. They were written off as soon as this series became official. They were written off after Game Three and came back to tie the series and apply the pressure back to Los Angeles. The Hornets know what needs to be done and it’s all in the execution. Find a way to make it to 7, feed off that home crowd and take your chances on Saturday. Nobody’s giving you a chance, but nobody even gave you a chance to go to 6 games. That’s why we play the game! I bee-lieve!

Go Hornets!

I just visited with my grandmother.

She is 75 years old. And she said these exact words:

“Kobe… Boy, I don’t like Kobe. I don’t think he’s hurt at all.”
I love my grandma.

I only have one problem with this post.

The aliens stole Shawn Bradley’s talents in the movie, not Sean Marks.

Statistics, over a long enough period, are usually accurate, right?

So isn’t it about time for Green and Jack to hit some shots? Really? Right? It’s like the law of math or something.

by m-W on Apr 28, 2011 12:45 PM CDT reply actions

A single series is a pretty small sample

So unfortunately, the law of large numbers does not apply. :(

Certainly also need

Carl Landry do to do what he does best – score. Last game he was a big no factor and partially explains why despite the nice games out of CP3, Marco and Trevor we weren’t in the game in much of the 2nd half.

A couple things from a Laker Fan...

Firstly, I would like to say. I really appreciate how hard your team is playing, how humble and how effective Monty Williams is, and how effective, efficient, and skilled Chris Paul is. Of course I knew all these things before the series started, but the Hornets haven’t shown up against LA in any of the 4 regular season games so I didn’t expect THIS. When you surround Kobe with Talent, all he does is win. He’s been a starter on a team with 50 wins 8 times in his career (9 including this season) and he’s made the finals 7 of those 8 seasons. when you don’t give Kobe a supporting cast of rejects like Luke Walton and Kwame Brown and Smush Parker he wins games, he wins playoff series, and he wins championships. That’s led us in LA, those who have followed the Lakers for more than a decade, to not believe in the concept of over-achieving. For LA it’s always a championship or bust, we still consider 2004 and 2008 a failure although many teams would consider a finals berth a success. The last time I felt the Lakers over-achieved was when Kobe led a team of nincampoops to the playoffs and almost knocked out the heavily favored Suns. So I know how you guys are feeling and especially to have it be on the back of a superstar transcendent player like Chris Paul much like Kobe’s historic 35.6 season in 05-06.

That being said, the “road to beating” the lakers isn’t correct. The stat about Kobe shooting more and the team winning less is a stupid stat and has been labeled as much by countless nba analysts who actually coached or played the game. Kobe shoots more usually BECAUSE the rest of his team is struggling and we’re down double digits. He usually starts of the game facilitating, and eases into a scorer role. If all goes well, as it often does when everything is clicking, he plays 30 minutes, shoots 15 shots, and rests much of the fourth. Kobe’s relatively been kept at bay because of his ankle injury, which despite current popular opinion, is real. Go back and watch the isiah thomas game, he limped around but when he had the ball he was explosive. Kobe wasn’t limping around because it’s not as severe, but he definitely tweaked his ankle in game 4, that was not a mirage lol. The other reason Kobe has been kept at bay is that Monty Williams is doubling Kobe everytime Kobe gets the ball in the post below the FT line. If you let kobe operate one-on-one against Ariza from there…God Help You lol. And if you double, you allow ron to go off.

Much of Ron’s offensive success comes from two sources. Open shots because of Kobe/Pau being doubled (usually Kobe as Pau doesn’t make cross-court passes and rarely shares the strong side with Ron) and his post ups. Marco can’t stop his post ups, but if you stay at home on him and don’t double Kobe, your team will get into foul trouble early and Ariza will be the one racking up those fouls, not a great idea in my opinion.

Look....gonna go easy on you

Because I know you had a hard time as a kid learning to spell your name and explaining to others why it had so many consonants and how to pronounce it.
I am sure this was hard on you…

But to say Kobe was really hurt is testing my, our, common sense.
Look, we’re from the middle west and need a little more reality to our lives and this is very likely not so over on the left coast where you are so surrounded by people making livings pretending be other people….and image is god, not reality.

Kobe’s miraculous healing and recovery is one of biblical proportions. I mean, he was limping into the stadium before the game, then he was performing above the rim with remarkable dunks.
Oh, really?
What prayers does he say? We could all use such powerful god attention getting words.

So , as Da Coach used to say in Chicago, who you crapping?

Go hornets!

I think the key to win this game is defensive rebounding,we are palying good defense but in games that we lost Lakers had a lot of 2nd chance points despite missing a lot of shots,we need Okafor to control the paint and be the same good rebounder that he was in the regular season and we will need help from Ariza and Paul that are shockingly the Hornets rebounding leaders on this series

If they already know what they can't do against the lakers

WHY DO THEY KEEP DOING IT.

jumpers

Hornets need to move around like that--try to slash and get shots going to the rim...

without any postup game; keep it up, let it rip CP!

ten points is still doable

but we need stuff from certain forwards….
and Paul needs to start getting excited.

That last quarter better not see anything left on the floor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smith blocked the shot

I know he gave him the shoulder but he didn’t even hit him hard. If anything Kobe should get a T for taunting.

Fight all the way till the end Hornets!

"Wally: [going home in a taxicab] I treated myself to a taxi. I rode home through the city streets. There wasn't a street, there wasn't a building, that wasn't connected to some memory in my mind. There, I was buying a suit with my father. There, I was having an ice cream soda after school. And when I finally came in, Debbie was home from work, and I told her everything about my dinner with Andre."

Another reason

to dislike the Lakers. Up 17 with three minutes to go and they have 3 starters and the 6th man of the year on the floor. Hopefully the Hornets still make a run.

Positives

1.) The undersized, undermanned Hornets pushed a suspected sweep to 6 games.
2.) I have a great feeling that Carl “The Tooth” Landry will re-sign with the Hornets
3.) Chris Paul was revived in this series, and I think he can build on that for next season. Also, remember him saying the team has “the best coaching staff in the league?”
4.) Judging by an in-game interview with Monty Williams, he knows the team lacks offense. I see a flurry of offseason moves to bring in some more offense.
5.) The Saints made 2 great 1st round picks (Jordan, Ingram) to help keep us entertained in the offseason.

I just dread the CP-Circus that officially starts…. now.

Reppin' the Lafayette Hornets fans.

I Had To Work Tonight

Checking on the score on my phone was agonizing. I don’t want to have to do that ever again. Checking the box score it looks like the Hornets played it tough but that they finally ran on empty. I know they pushed the Lakers further than even I thought they would but it still is dissapointing to have the season end. I’ll watch tonight’s game (I have it DVR’d) but it won’t be for a couple days.

Hope everyone sticks around here for the offseason. I still love this team!

Go Hornets!
