Your Pregame Moment of Zen
(if the full table doesn't show up for you, click on it for a full version)
Eric Gordon Out Again
Looks like Eric Gordon will sit out his third consecutive game, per the Times-Pic.
I know it's real early, but that "Chris Paul has played more games over the last three seasons than Eric Gordon" stat will make us feel more and more queasy the longer this goes on. The injury was apparently caused by Gordon knocking knees with Grant Hill in the season opener last Monday.
A Word on the Pregame Moment of Zen
I should point out that I'm being at least a little facetious with the above table. While their raw offensive stats look reasonably similar at this point in their careers, Eric Gordon and Marcus Thornton are very different players. Thornton relies heavily on long pull up jumpers, and while he does indeed shoot a decent percentage on them, I'd much, much rather have Gordon's penetrative ability (almost two whole free throw attempts more per 36 minutes), especially given the fact that Gordon also has the exact same range as Thornton.
Gordon's defense is also a strong positive, and there's really no comparison with Thornton's defense in Monty Williams' system (where the effort was often there, but the fundamental defensive ability and end results were decidedly not). Top it all off with the fact that Gordon is more than a year and a half younger than Marcus. Thornton is close to his peak as an offensive player, and Gordon, potentially, has a ways to grow. Ultimately, there's a reason why there's legitimate talk of Gordon receiving a max extension and, similarly, legitimate discussion of whether Thornton is worth his new 4 year/$31M deal.
But all that said - yes, we did lose a damn fine player in Marcus Thornton. It's a move that will never stop stinging.
Subplots
- DeMarcus Cousins, a player I dubbed the Human Traveling Violation last season, has somehow managed to up his usage rate from 27% to 30% in the young season. He's a beast on the boards and a load to handle offensively, but he's also been hilariously bad around the rim (36% this year). That should correct itself soon enough.
- Tyreke Evans looked headed towards superstardom as a rookie. After getting hurt last year, this is a relatively important season for him. Getting back to even his rookie levels of productivity will be quite an ask though.
- Sacramento's been great on the offensive glass early on, led by the aforementioned Cousins, but also by one of my favorite guys in the league, Chuck Hayes. It's great to see the Chuckwagon back with the Kings after he had his initial contract voided due to a health condition.
- This is the first of a road back-to-back, with the Hornets traveling to Utah tomorrow. Eric Gordon figures to sit that one out as well before maybe returning for the Hornets' home game on Wednesday against Philly.
- Dell Demps has been on an interesting travel schedule of late, catching the Oregon State-Washington game on Thursday, the California-UCLA game yesterday, and attending every Hornets game in between.
- Go Hornets.

I'd take JJack over Evans
Evans can play a good game every now and then, but he throws up some absolute ducks. I kinda thought the PG experiment with him would be over by now. Kings are running a SG1 and SG2 lineup
I don't know that I've seen a guy
that can get to the rim so effortlessly though. That was the thing with rookie Tyreke – * everyone * knew he was driving to the rim but nobody could stop him regardless
I agree that he is incredibly talented
But he’s a bit of a bipolar player. It’s hard to win a championship with a hot/cold player like that. He’s like JR Smith without the baggage
Sounds like he suspended himself
At least that’s what Westphal is saying.

It'd make the Hornets a pretty exciting team to watch if they had Cousins
Plays PF and C, 20/10 nightly. Even his tantrums are pretty entertaining sometimes.
Obviously
he would make any team better but any GM would rather have someone with a bit of intelligence and professionalism. Lets be honest now Cousins is a bit of a meathead and thinks hes way better than he is. I already offer my condolences to the team that gets him.
Some players are able to overcome it
See Vernon Davis on the 49ers. I’d much rather play with Cousins than against him. Mature or not. The guy plays some serious basketball.
Crazy good rebounder, really good passer for a big
Explosive offensive game, and quite solid as a defender last year.
If he can be more disciplined, stop taking so many dumb shots, stop traveling/charging all the time, and in general stop being an idiot, he’s a superstar.
Whether all those things can be removed is an open question..
Would you take the gamble on him?
I think I would depending on the price. Carl Landry and a 2nd rounder or two?
What if we end up picking twice in the 10-14 range though?
Which is definitely a possibility…
None of the guys in that range have even remotely the upside Cousins does
Cousins might be my least favorite player in the league right now
But in a scenario where the Kings accepted the lower of our two picks headlining a package for him, I’d have to think hard about it
Cousins is a meathead
He is a physical beast and a mental midget
When you see antics like his you see why fans have had a hard time siding with players during the strike.I have no problem with players getting their money but this type of insubordination makes me puke. Good for Westphalia.

Tough Game Tonight
Sacramento is one of those poorly constructed teams that have a bunch of wing players, a ton of talent and absolutely no structure. That’s why they’ll be bad over the course of a full season but they’re dangerous on any given night. The Hornets will have to play great defense to keep this game from getting out of hand (especially in Sacramento). I’m interested to see if the Hornets team from the Phoenix game or the Hornets team from the Boston game shows up on offense tonight. They don’t have a problem sharing the ball (except for Kaman and sometimes Jack) but there’s just nobody to really create offense for them outside of Jack when Gordon’s out of the lineup. So I’m interested to see how they rebound (no pun intended) from the other night’s brickfest. First night of a back to back… let’s hope they’re resting guys because they’re blowing the Kings out and not because the Kings are blowing them out.
Go Hornets!

BTW
Do you think that less of Ariza that you have him equal to John Salmons?

Good stuff
Nice point on the dangerous any given night. We’ve had a problem with these kind of teams historically, even when we were… good. haha
Thornton
I loved him when he was here for sure. I’ve moved on from it though and he’s already played them once last season. He may shoot a ton tonight to try and get back at the Hornets but looking at the way the Kings have played with him taking those shots the last three games, it may not be something I’m totally against.

This game is a bit of a homecoming for Demps
He went to school right down the road from Sacramento at UOP.
At the Hive's resident draft expert, Brain, said he'd have something on this soon enough
But as far as I can tell, not too many prospects in the Cal-UCLA game especially
Brain, indeed
Washington has Terrence Ross (who’s really awesome), UCLA has Joshua Smith (who’s really huge).
Tough to get assists on that team
Washington is a shoot first, ask questions later team

TRADE IDEA
HORNETS SEND: Chris Kaman, Top-14 protected 1st round pick
KINGS SEND: DeMarcus Cousins, Jason Thompson
haven’t tried to match salaries, but I think this is a fairly even trade.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a value for DeMarcus
Because he’s such an incredibly risky asset… I think the Hornets should be willing to try to bid for him, because of his talent, but that dude’s just nuts.
Because they're desperate to trade DeMarcus
and because I told them to.

good play for the bigs so far.
I hope belli can get out this slup. Also I think if he cannot you give Vasquez more burn at the end of the game.
Is this one of those stats that is actually not a good one to be good in.
More offensive rebounds means more misses. Also shooting 40% from the line tonight!
Nah
Offensive rebounding percentage, so it accounts for simply missing a lot of shots.
You’re right, raw offensive rebounds would be a bad stat to look at in a game with a lot of misses
What should I do?
finish watching the game or go on Xbox Live? Speaking of XBL, what happened with that 2K12 league, ROHAN!!!

He'd look even better
if he had more guys running and filling the lanes. This is where I’d like to see Monty change his strategy some from last year. We DON’T have uber-efficient PG play so slowing it down makes zero sense.
Obvious comment of the Night: We are not a good offensive team
I like Belinelli more than most Hornets fans, but tonight (just like Friday vs Suns) his chucking up shots is KILLING us. Vasquez needs more minutes, and I like paring him with Jack more than Marco. Actually think that backcourt has a lot of scoring/playmaking potential (or at least more than status quo). Gosh we need the Commish back ASAP. And where is Landry???
Monty is giving him the the thornton treatment
Seems only right considering he was the player rec’d in return. Haha jk. Did he get hurt?
yeah my biggest problems are the reply thing
and the fact that the “comments” button is so tiny on the post itself
I've seen high school kids
take a better last second 3 point shot than Jarrett just jjjjjjjjjaaaaaacked up.
Yeah even if Vasquez cannot hit the side of a brick wall,
he can create more offensive looks for us. Which we need right now because we can shoot outside the ark…the one under the rim
I think they only got like 3 days as a whole team.
It’s sad when someone can come in to a system you know and look better then you.
Well it's time to start everyone who is on schedule to be here next year.
Vasquez, Gordon, Aminu, Ayon, who ever. lol
Is there anyone here that's into looking up stats?
I remember last year the Hornets seemed to come out flat out of halftime. Maybe it just seemed that way. But maybe someone could look to see pts scored for and against the hornets in the first half and second half last year and this year?
Maybe the worst backcourt play
…by a “starting” NBA backcourt I have ever seen.
How bout dem Saints.
Seriously, if Belinelli can’t shoot, he is worthless, and if Jack can’t avoid lazy turnovers, he is about the same.
I am older than most of you, and was a fan of the Sixers in the infamous 9-73 season. Tonight’s game started to give me flashbacks.
"I have had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it." Groucho Marx
Now we know where our bad luck is coming from!
Haha jk. Beli was pretty worthless last year. 3rd string at best. He’ll probably be gone next year. And Jack is just doing too much. Hornets need more offensive pieces. Ariza shouldn’t be taking 14 shots.
