On the Grizzlies

You have to feel for Memphis.

Last year, they came within a game of the Western Conference Finals, missing arguably their second best offensive player, and looked poised to make another deep run in 2012, amidst a Western Conference in transition. Maybe a run to the 2012 Finals was always beyond their reach, but given the current state of the conference (OKC's defense making them vulnerable), who knows?

Instead, the Grizzlies have been struck down by injury. Zach Randolph led the NBA in offensive rebounding in 2010-2011 and posted 115 offensive efficiency on 25% usage (read: outstanding). Now, he's out two months with a torn knee ligament. Behind him, Darrell Arthur was one of the league's most productive front court players. He's out for the season.

In response, Memphis moved for Marreese Speights from Philly (moving Xavier Henry to New Orleans) and Quincy Pondexter from New Orleans (in exchange for Greivis Vasquez), but, clearly, neither of those guys will come close to filling the hole left by Randolph and Arthur. Memphis has gone from a fringe Western contender to something decidedly worse. Their team offense has been dreadful; at 98.0 points/100 possessions, they're 26th in the NBA, right ahead of the 27th ranked Hornets (97.9 pts/100 poss). Their big problem, much like ours, has been effective shot creation as Memphis ranks in the bottom half of the league in both eFG% and FT/FG.

Other Notes

- Your opposing team blog for the evening is Straight Outta Vancouver.

- No new word on who will be starting at the 3 for us, though, on the basis of Dajuan Summers' performance and Al-Farouq Aminu's lack of minutes last night, I'd lean Summers again.

- Go Hornets, Go Saints, Go Tebow

Another Head Scratcher

No way to get a real read on the game. I really liked what Memphis did against New York the other night but New York was soooooooooo bad in that game that it’s hard to tell what was the reason for it. As for the Hornets, I’m sure they’ll come out with better energy tonight after the way they lost last night. I always like the subplot of players suiting up against their former teams too… and we have that with Pondexter and Vasquez tonight. Hopefully it works better in our favor. I always felt having Gay back would hurt Memphis honestly and I felt vindicated by that to the start of the season but we’ll see if they play any better without Randolph now. I’m just not positive those two can co-exist. All I can say, with certainty, is that I’d rather see Gay out there than Randolph tonight. Maybe that’s just me.

Go Hornets!

…. and go Chargers :(

I've definately gotten my share of Pats-Chargers playoff matchups

The Divisional game in ’06 was a really fun game

Vazq

could be decent. Seems to have good IQ in understanding how to get into space and stuff, but man, he’s gotta work on that shot.

his last shot

was just really ugly for a short floater

by RedHopeful on Jan 14, 2012 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

I dunno

I could see him ending up better than say Calderon.

by RedHopeful on Jan 14, 2012 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

really?

Calderone is one of the 2 or 3 best Assists/minute guys in the league.

by MZURK on Jan 14, 2012 9:27 PM CST up reply actions

yup

horrible dfender among other things but great, great vision

by Rohan on Jan 14, 2012 9:28 PM CST via Android app up reply actions

Seems to have above average vision

but when you add it to his frame I see very good ceiling. No doubt I probably need to watch him in another 10 games before making such a statement though. :)

by RedHopeful on Jan 14, 2012 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

he does have that frame

6’6" is unusual for true PG. Jamal Crawford can also play PG at 6’5"/6’6" but he’s just a shooting point (one of many)…

Still Frustrating

I hate that this team is in every single game only to lose at the end. That kills me!

Are we the only team that hasn't score over 100pts in a game this season?

What do you guys think if we swap the Minny first rounder for Rubio? Will Minny do that?

by RockyMountain on Jan 15, 2012 2:05 AM CST reply actions

that pick probably will be towards the bottom of the lottery.

why would Minny wait 2 years then swap a player who was a mid lottery pick who is playing fantastic for a late lottery pick that is an unknown…

by MZURK on Jan 16, 2012 9:46 AM CST up reply actions

You Keep Saying

Late lottery as if Minnesota isn’t just one game better than the Hornets right now.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Jan 16, 2012 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

Record is less important

At this point, record is probably less important than how the teams are playing. Minnesota is playing solidly, with a positive net +/-. Odds are that will eventually be reflected in the record.

Further, Minny’s position relative to NO’s position isn’t really relevant.

Minny’s position relative to NY’s position is more relevant since NY’s pick is the pick we could have had but won’t.

by MZURK on Jan 18, 2012 11:15 PM CST up reply actions

What I don't get is, people forget that it is a lottery. Meaning, it's position doesn't really matter,

as long as it is in the lottery. How many teams with bigger chance to get high draft picks actually get high draft picks?

by RockyMountain on Jan 16, 2012 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

It's a bell curve lottery

The later you are in the lottery, the lower your chance is to get one of the top 4 picks. Last place in the lottery has almost no chance to get the top pick.

So although position in the lottery doesn’t guarantee your lottery pick, it does stack the odds one way or the other.
