On the Grizzlies
We talked a little bit about Memphis a couple days ago, so if you want to check that out, it's here. Obviously not much has changed since then. Zach Randolph is still injured, Darrell Arthur is still out for the season, and the Memphis version of Jason Smith, Josh Davis, continues to do Jason Smith/Josh Davis things.
Since Sunday's meeting, New Orleans has lost twice (including the Memphis game) and the Grizzlies have won twice (including the Hornets game). Above all, this game is most important for...
The Return of Quincy Pondexter!
He's back! And now's as good a time to check out how he's doing as a Grizzly.
Miss you Quincy :(
PER: up to 12.1 from 8.5 from last year (15 is league average)
Offensive Efficiency: up to +9 from -5 last year (differential from league average)
True Shooting: up to 51% from 48% last year
Usage: up to 15.4% from 13.7% last year
And moving away from box-score based statistics, we also have this interesting detail:
Last year, 44% of Quincy's offensive possessions came on spot up opportunities (largely leading to jump shots). That was far and away his most common function on offense, with transition possessions (13%) coming in second for his overall offensive usage. This year, in the early going, that has been flipped, with his spot up possessions accounting for just 30% of his offense, and his transition possessions jumping up to 21.5%. Keeping in mind that transition is the easiest place to score in the NBA, and it's not that much of a surprise that his overall box score numbers are up.
It doesn't hurt at all that he's increased his long-two percentage to 59% from 29% last year, but those increased transition chances have been pretty nice.
Other Notes
- Your opposing team blog for the evening is Straight Outta Vancouver.
- Anybody could start at the three or the four tonight. Literally anyone. You, me, Jamal Mashburn, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Mmm, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
- Memphis is, weirdly, the best defender of P&R rollers in the NBA this season. So tonight won't be Lob City for Chris Kaman like it normally is.
- I know he's not a star, nor will he ever be one, but I'm legitimately excited for Gustavo Ayon to check into the game.
How come we don't have a PaintShop of him yet?

I love some of the NBA's nonsensical names
New Orleans Hornets…Memphis Grizzlies… Utah Jazz… Los Angeles Lakers… Washington Wizards…I know most of those names are holdovers from teams that moved, but they are comical if not farcical..
The NBA might generate some more interest in New Orleans fans if it ran a contest for the fans to name the team.
My leaders in the clubhouse… the Jazz (oops, taken); the flambeaus; the krewe; and the Cat 5.

I Always Liked
The Brass name that the minor league hockey team used. But in all honesty, changing the name of the Hornets wouldn’t do anything for the city’s support. Only winning can do that.

I partially disagree
I could see a name change, once new ownership fills the void, adding another element to the appeal of the team to the city. New Orleanians are a fiercely loyal bunch and a name reflecting the city could only help.
They've Changed Everything Else
But the name. Hasn’t worked thus far.

Memphis Again
Hopefully some of that preseason magic against Memphis still exists. In all honesty, Rudy Gay’s been terrific lately and Mike Conley really hurt the Hornets in the last match-up. I’m interested in seeing how Pondexter plays tonight in front of the crowd although I’m sure he’ll be warmly greeted. The Hornets have to eventually find a way to close out games but I’m afraid that may continue to be a problem until Eric Gordon finds his way back into the lineup. Without Randolph, the Grizzlies aren’t a team with overly impressive size (Marc Gasol is far and away their best option) and without that excuse, the Hornets have a chance to take out Memphis tonight. But they’ve had chances to take out every team they’ve played thus far…. they just find ways to dig themselves holes they can’t get out of.
Maybe we’ll see some offense tonight…. please….. possible…. I hope.
Go Hornets!

By The Way
Long live Big Country indeed. I have class tonight so I’m going to miss a majority of the game (my frickin’ computer is acting up) so it’s on y’all to pull the team through.

Just lousy offense again
For instance, Jack gave it to to Smith, couple of dribbles and contested mid-long perimeter shot. Puke.
Lol
Grizz shot 81% from the field
Kind of disappointed to see Trey and Summers ahead of Aminu. Maybe it’s their last gasp to stay on the roster?
I was hoping it would be within ten by the time I got home from work
Close enough, I guess… Also: I enjoyed Gay’s “And one, bitch!”
"he's feeling it"... "he's feeling it"
That’s pretty much the last thing I want to hear being said about Ariza…
yeah, could be worse
Still, we’re playing at home and have Ariza back…. hope we can pull even by the end of the 3rd..
Where's C. Landry?
Is he hurt or did I just miss him with my late arrival?

he's mired in a deep rotation
as he’s done very little to distinguish himself and earn more time from Monty

As far as I am concerned
..they should bench Okafor until they trade him..As a season ticket holder, he is stealing my money, In fact, I think I will bring a newspaper to the next game and pretend to read it anytime he has the ball, cause he shows about as much interest in playing for the Hornets as I have in watching him play.
It is pitiful for him to be outplayed by Jason Smith and Gustavo Ayon. Sickening really.

Tonight's game from my perspective.
Jack – Awesome scoring game a few nice assist.. who said the PG was suppose to be the engine.
Vasquez – he cannot finish when he attacks the basket, so he looks to pass when he drives, only he plays with 4 statues.
Marco – I hope Professor X has a really good debut tomorrow night.
Trevor – we missed you awesome D a few nice jump shots a nice drive or 2. Who ever said I wonder what his line would look like without fast breaks or attacking the basket, that’s just silly what would Reggie Millers game look like if you took away all his 3’s?
Kamen & Landry do not need to play anymore for this team they are going to be traded anyway and they are only stunting the growth of others.
Maybe its a psychological thing with Okafor...
He seems to play small against most taller Centers in the league. I noticed that last season when they played Memphis and from then on. He played over 20+ minutes and went 2-2 FGs & 4 Rebs. Really Okafor?……
I said the PG is the engine of the team…. a traditional form of basketball has always been driven by the PG. Our system is based on that traditional form. So goes the PG, so goes the team. Unfortunately more than a few players on the team are shooting blanks that effect the PG stats. Jack could avg a double-double on most nights if his teammates really concentrated on finishing. Assists only count when the player he passes the ball to makes the shot….. I also said Vasquez has a ball control problem that could be a problem now but hopefully improve as the season goes.
