Update on Eric Gordon contract talks

From David Aldridge/NBA.com:

With less than 10 days before the Jan. 25 deadline for contract extensions for the Class of 2008, only one of the 30 first-round picks from that Draft -- Derrick Rose, natch -- has received a new deal. And not too many of Rose's fellow first-rounders are going to join him.

At the moment, only a handful of players -- Minnesota's Kevin Love, Denver's Danilo Gallinari and Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook -- are even in the hunt to get deals, though several players' agents are engaged, or will soon engage, in conversations with their respective teams. But so far, no one's betting on the come for an Eric Gordon, or a Roy Hibbert, or a JaVale McGee.

New Orleans' Gordon was the key player in the Chris Paul trade last month, with the Hornets insisting they had to have the 23-year-old guard, who's already been on the U.S. World Championship team and is one of the game's up-and-coming scorers.

Gordon is in a tough position; with the Hornets currently owned by the NBA, the likelihood of the league okaying a major financial commitment to anyone before the team is sold (Commissioner David Stern maintained last month that that could happen by the spring) is iffy -- especially considering how the league insisted on young, inexpensive players as part of the Chris Paul deal. (Not to mention the fact that the team's other "owners" -- the 28 other teams -- weren't all that happy when New Orleans acquired Carl Landry and his salary last year at the trade deadline.) And Gordon might be reluctant to re-up with New Orleans until the team is sold, if at all. But the two sides are "working on it," a source texted Sunday night.

Trevor Ariza Practicing:

From John Reid/Times Picayune:

New Orleans Hornets starting small forward Trevor Ariza went through his first full-scaled practice on Tuesday since suffering a groin strain in a Jan. 2 game against Utah.

Hornets Coach Monty Williams said he will probably make a decision before Wednesday night’s game against Memphis to determine if Ariza plays.

"We’ll see how he reacts,'' Williams said. "I'm just waiting to talk to (trainer Jon Ishop) to see if it’s Ok.''

Quincy Pondexter Becoming Memphis "Glue" Guy

From Ronald Tillery/Memphis Commercial Appeal:

"Quincy is a live body," Griz forward Rudy Gay said. "It's great to have guys like him out there to help keep the team together. Every team needs that guy and he's perfect for us."

Pondexter is a 6-6 swingman the Griz acquired Dec. 24 from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for guard Greivis Vasquez. The 23-year-old Pondexter is also Gay's primary understudy and the most likely to succeed as the Grizzlies' new glue guy.

ondexter is far from bitter about being traded so early in his career. Perhaps that's because he no longer will spend most of his time spotting up for jump shots.

"I'm a basketball player," Pondexter said. "It's not like I'm a guy who can't shoot or dribble. I'm a basketball player who can do a lot of things on the court. At the end of the day, I'm going to do whatever it takes to help this team win. I like this situation a lot more than I was in. I can see myself blossoming here. I'm really looking forward to seeing what will happen with this situation."

International Perspective on Gustavo Ayon

From FIBA.com:

New Zealand international Kirk Penney offered some good insight to Gustavo Ayon of the New Orleans Hornets when he was asked about his former Fuenlabrada teammate on Saturday night.

"Gustavo is such a joy to play with," Penney said to FIBA.com. "He runs the floor better than any of us, and he's a big guy. You don't replace a player like Gustavo. You just try to fill the hole with a collection of players."

Ayon didn't arrive in New Orleans beating his chest, telling the city that he was the cure to their ills.

He knows the NBA is different to the Liga Endesa. "Spanish basketball is very tactical, very difficult to adapt to the tactics," he said. "In the NBA, there are more physical and athletic players."

"There is going to be a period of adaptation to the league, to the culture, to everything.

"Once I'm settled, I'll try to improve every day and do the best for the team."

Ayon, it appears, is ahead of schedule.

Muggsy Bogues Spreads Basketball in India:

From FIBA.com:

NEW DELHI (NBA) - Muggsy Bogues was the most popular player to wear a Charlotte Hornets uniform.

Now 47 years of age, Bogues remains hugely popular because of what he did in basketball.

He's not far from the game, though. Bogues, a coach in Charlotte at United Faith Christian Academy, only just returned home after a trip to New Delhi to promote the sport.

"I feel like this is my mission - to help introduce kids to basketball everywhere," said Bogues, who went to India at the behest of the NBA.

It was his ability to compete in the toughest league in the world with four different NBA teams for 14 years, despite his height, that still leaves people shaking their heads in disbelief.

"The culture of the sport says there's no place for someone my size," Bogues said. "But if you pursue it, chase it, great things can happen. My presence is probably more powerful than anything I could say."

Bogues was in New Delhi and coached 75 youngsters at a clinic for an afternoon.

An Analysis of Market Size:

From Orlando Pinstriped Post/SBNation:

So what is the difference between a market and a population?

A market is in effect like an audience. If you are having an outdoor concert however many people are able to hear you is the size of your audience. If you have a business, however many people you are able to reach is your market. This is based largely on population, but there are other factors, like competition and interest.

When talking about market size in relation to the NBA what people are talking about are the Nielsen's Local Television Market Rankings. These rankings count the number of households with television sets in any local broadcast area and are used widely to determine marketing value for commercials.

Again, going by traditional Nielsen's rankings the outstanding performances of Miami, Orlando, San Antonio, Cleveland, and OKC make absolutely no sense. Using a more reasoned and accurate model we are able to account for this success and the whole thing is completely logical.

My Thoughts

1. I’ll say it again, I love Chris Kayman as a person. He just seems like he really enjoys life and likes to have fun in an innocent way. Further, from the locker room chemistry perspective, I think it’s a fair bet that a guy who goes home to play with Legos isn’t going to be a rotten apple on the team or get in trouble because of drugs or violence, etc. He just seems like someone you could easily be friends with.

2. My blood seethed and boiled when I read Aldridge’s piece:

“Gordon is in a tough position; with the Hornets currently owned by the NBA, the likelihood of the league okaying a major financial commitment to anyone before the team is sold (Commissioner David Stern maintained last month that that could happen by the spring) is iffy — especially considering how the league insisted on young, inexpensive players as part of the Chris Paul deal.”

Note the part I highlighted. Does anyone still honestly believe that Stern canceled the Lakers deal and ok’d the Clippers deal because of “basketball reasons” after reading this?

3. Regarding Quincy, I think some people on this board kind of gave up on him last year, but I was confident he could potentially improve going forward and I thought his first year was fine considering where he went in the draft. Fortunately, Vasquez has shown some flashes as well so hopefully we won’t end up regretting that deal.

Yes. This is that particular writer’s take on it. Just as there’s an argument that Stern did this simply for a blank slate for a new owner, there’s an equally valid opposing argument that he did this because it was in the best interest of actually building the team. This article neither fully affirms or denies either perspective.

by Rohan on Jan 18, 2012 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

still

Still, it’s not encouraging that the writer brings up that financial considerations may have been a key issue in analyzing both trades by our “owner”.

Of course financial considerations are always analyzed, but it’s a question of how important they are. If financial considerations were a key factor in rejecting the Lakers trade (rather than “basketball reasons”, as the writer seems to suggest, then that it pretty damning..

Based on a position basis...

I believe Vasquez was better for what the Hornets NEEDED. Q Pon did show flashes of good potential and I honestly think by the end of the season with more playing time he’s getting in Memphis, he’s going to be better than Ariza(my opinion). I hope Vasquez’s ball handling skills improve because he’s almost like a SG but I think he’ll get better also as the season rolls on.
I had doubts about Stern’s reasons for voiding the original trade for CP3 when we got Kaman instead of Jordan. You talk about youth and we get Kaman instead of Jordan?…… Something smelled fishy then and being from New Orleans, we KNOW what fishy smells like.
I’m happy to hear about Ariza possibly returning for his great defense but Lord knows we have enough brick layers. Our deal/trade was mainly based on Gordon so I won’t be truly happy until I hear positive news on him returning.

by fshabazz on Jan 18, 2012 9:23 AM CST reply actions

The deal that Stern voided would have made New Orleans a lot better team than what you are now.

I am a Rockets fan and had mixed feelings on what we were giving on the deal. I use to be a fan of Stern’s but after the way he handled that and then Lied about it I have no use for him now. Good luck to New Orleans except when You play the Rockets.

Jordan

There was never a chance for the Hornets to get Gordon, Jordan AND the lottery pick. That was NEVER a proposal. In fact, Jordan never came up in any of the discussions. Kaman coming back as an expiring contract is the reason he was the only “non-youth” guy coming back.

initially

Initially there was talk of Gordon and Jordan.

There Were Rumors

There were never talks. Just because the Hornets possibly asked for him doesn’t mean it was ever seriously discussed.

yeah

That’s true. But we don’t really know what was actually discussed. I know I read once that Gordon + Jordan might have been a possibility. I remember because I was somewhat more positive on that idea rather than Gordon + Kaman.

As you said, it might have been just speculation, but we can’t say that it never came up in the discussions.

The most interesting thing in the QPon article

was he stated he’s a basketball player. Sounds like Monty limited him in what he was allowed to do on the court? If so, why? Because he’s a rookie? Can’t be because Green, Beli and Ariza were all markedly better…

by RedHopeful on Jan 18, 2012 10:21 AM CST reply actions

hmm

I noticed that too, but don’t put too much weight on that.

It’s just a player talking himself up and trying to suggest that he could have always been the player that he is now. It’s kind of self-marketing.

I think Qpon had a fair deal in his first season.

by MZURK on Jan 18, 2012 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I chalk that up to someone getting more minutes and bragging about getting them. Nothing more, nothing less. Quincy was certainly not limited to just being a jump shooter here in New Orleans, especially because he wasn’t any good at that. He had opportunities here and didn’t make anything of them; he has nobody to blame but himself.

right

Though I wouldn’t say he completely didn’t make anything of them. I think he was fine the first year, not a disappointment.

Interesting Set of Links Today

Pondexter’s comments have already been covered. I find it kind of spotty that he’s criticizing the way he was utilized last year when there was just never any moments where he took advantage of his spots in the starting lineup. I’m happy for him in Memphis though. It’s these kind of comments I wish Gordon and Kaman would have made a few weeks back instead of using their time to whine about how they left the Clippers.

As for Gordon’s contract talks, the Hornets should be diligent in their talks simply because of his frequent injuries. I don’t mind him going into the offseason as a restricted free agent. I also don’t give the article any credence seeing as how they seemed to support talking back inexpensive players which wasn’t the case. The team wanted young players, which Gordon and Aminu are. The glass ALWAYS seems to be half empty when people talk about New Orleans basketball and it’s incredibly frustrating to read.

And for Chris Kaman…. so long as I never have to see him on the court, I love the fact that he’s a part of the team. He’s a pretty cool guy it seems like.

Yeah, he may be cool, but I’m not fond of him being a part of the team. He’s more subtraction than addition right now.

I Know

My comment was meant in jest.

Kaman

I think Kaman is doing fine all things considered.

Further, getting Kaman and not playing him is unfortunately not an option since presumably a big part of the reason why we got him was as trade bait and he has little trade value if he’s on the bench after an injury plagued season last year.
