Rockets 90, Hornets 88: "If turnovers were worth points, we’d win every game"

So said RyanCaz in the game thread, and so it was.

A late effort from njennings wins the day!

It was a hard fought game, a remarkable comeback effort, and ultimately, almost a winning effort. But, like most every game this season, it was not.

Lots of blame to go around, but lots of praise too. Let's start with the two instances where the Hornets had clear chances to put the game away. The first came after Jarrett Jack drew a late trip to the line and had a chance to put New Orleans up one. Of course, he failed to come through, and it's easy to blame him for that. The fact remains though that "clutch" is far more a function of luck than any innate ability to either star in late game situations or choke. Jack missed, and it will rightly weigh on him in the aftermath of defeat. But the team wouldn't have even been in that situation without his ability to get to the line.

The second came about halfway through overtime, with the Hornets up six and in full possession of game momentum. Their downfall? Offensive play calling. The team ran a series of awkward looking picks with a front court of Chris Kaman and Jason Smith (itself a poor decision, given Emeka Okafor's moderate early game back-to-basket success and the fact that Kaman was playing rather inefficiently), but instead of running plays to get Jason Smith jump shots, they called for multiple Kaman lane dives. When Kaman wasn't diving, Houston simply let him hover around, something they could have ill-afforded to do had pick and rolls been run with Jason Smith. The offense proceeded to fall apart, and a couple of transition and semi-transition plays from Houston put them right back into the game.

Some further notes after the jump.

Star-divide

- A rough overall line from Jack - 6 for 15 (15 points), 3 turnovers, and his relative inability to create for teammates really stood out tonight more than it has in recent games. This is simply one of the realities of the 2011-2012 Hornets; without Eric Gordon (who isn't exactly a dynamic creator of shots for teammates himself), New Orleans lacks starting quality, well-rounded play-makers. Greivis Vasquez had 4 assists off the bench, making the late game Belinelli lineups a bit of a surprise.

- As MZURK pointed out in the game thread, Al-Farouq Aminu had this sequence in the second quarter:

11:05

Al-Farouq Aminu misses a layup

11:05

Al-Farouq Aminu offensive rebound

11:08

Al-Farouq Aminu misses a layup

11:08

Al-Farouq Aminu offensive rebound

11:10

Al-Farouq Aminu misses a layup

11:11

Al-Farouq Aminu offensive rebound

11:13

Al-Farouq Aminu misses a layup

11:13

Al-Farouq Aminu offensive rebound

He actually had a couple decent offensive and defensive plays, but that series encapsulates him as a player right now.

- Early on, we got more signs that the "new" Trevor Ariza could be here to stay. He passed up a couple long jump shot opportunities (smartly setting up an Emeka Okafor dunk in one case), but he clearly faded down the stretch. By the time overtime rolled around, he was completely invisible on the offensive end. His final line (10 points on 9 shots, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal) wasn't terrible though, and I'm interested to see if the new Trevor Ariza continues to supersede the previous, chucking iteration.

- 2 minutes for Gustavo Ayon. This does not make any sense, and your guess is as good as mine.

- The Hornets had another really poor shooting performance from range, hitting just 3 for 11 threes. Both their percentages and volume have dipped drastically this year. It's clearly another thing Eric Gordon will help immensely with, but this is ugly to watch right now.

- I definitely liked Monty Williams' decision to go for the win at the end of the OT. The play itself seemed to be muddied up by Houston on the inbounds, and Belinelli did well to get off as clean a look as he was eventually able to.

- Only 13 turnovers in a 97 possession game for the Hornets. Definite progress. With free throws, two pointers, fouls, and rebounds essentially even, it was the long ball that ultimately cost the Hornets the win.

So Much To Take Away

From the game and it makes the loss all the more frustrating. I can’t get into it too much right now because the loss still stings (so kudos to you, Rohan), but I felt like the team was REALLY going to win when it took that lead in the overtime. I’m not understanding the Marco late game lineups but I assume Monty likes his veterans and he likes his players that have been there (it must be the Pop in him). Those habits are frustrating but the team was still there and still had an opportunity to win. I was hoping Belinelli would draw the foul there at the end and I wish Jack would have closed out the big comeback but it wasn’t meant to be.

Tough loss to take tonight. Out of all the defeats this season, this one hurts the most (at least in the moment).

Not Necessarily

Monty and Scott are vastly different coaches. Scott seems much more stubborn than Monty ever will be (although that’s just me talking).

Rockets fan here

I think Monty did a great job making adjustments during half time. Ariza cooled down Martin and Smith really bothered Scola in the second half and overtime.

It was an ugly game but I think the Hornets have some good players for the future. Things will get a lot better once Gordon is back….at least I hope so since he is on my fantasy team. LOL

Gotta mention Jason Smith!

I thought he had one of his best games as a Hornet.

Ah, good call

The end game rotations kinda made me forget how well he actually played.

17 points on 8-16 ain’t nothin to sneeze at… we really shoulda gone to his jumper a bit more towards the end

Looking like

he’s going to stick in the starting lineup. Definitely been outplaying Landry of late. I’m beginning to wonder whether we’ll see last year Carl ever again.

Late in games...

The Hornets somehow become even more of a mid-range team, and I am surprised that is even possible. Every set becomes a pick and roll designed to either get a player a dribble drive (and if you’ve been watching Hornet games enough this season you know we do not have an individual capable of this) or an 18 foot jump shot. An 18 foot jump shot contested late is a net win for the defense regardless of result, it’s the least efficient play on the court. The offense the Hornets run is DESIGNED to settle for inefficient shots. This is mostly due to personnel as the roster is full of people who earn a living being slightly above average mid range players, having tons of potential or being known for playing defense. Who not named Eric Gordon does not fall into one of those three categories?

by usnfish on Jan 19, 2012 10:08 PM CST reply actions

Actually I think Jack

Is really good at the dribble drive.. Now what he is capable of doing after that is another story….head down tell shot goes up. Also I do not think he can even create i transition.

by 247_Hornet on Jan 19, 2012 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

If he’s good at the dribble drive but has his head down (cannot find teammates) and is a poor finisher in traffic then what is the point beyond creating the opportunity for a turnover? That is what I’m getting at here.

by usnfish on Jan 20, 2012 10:13 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed

Watching half this roster get undeserving big minutes is too stomach churning.

Since I don’t actually have the opportunity to watch any games, I can applaud this game as a heroic near-miss that brings us closer to a good lottery pick. I just wish some of the other cellar dwellers not named Minnesota would suck marginally less.

Great Post Rohan

I really think Kamen has worse hands the Emeka. Also every defense know the minute Kamen puts it on the floor heading towards the center of the court to reach in and snatch the ball. Guess what it always works. Yet Kamen still gets time and Ayon sits on the Bench,.

by 247_Hornet on Jan 19, 2012 11:01 PM CST reply actions

My best guess

is Kaman is being showcased. FO is just hoping this guy has a couple of big plays in several games that results in wins.

by RedHopeful on Jan 19, 2012 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm

Just did some checking – Kaman can’t be traded till Feb. 14. Not that far away fellas.

According to HornetsReport, MIN is interested in Oak. Unfortunately, (according to Sam Amico) hearing that Beasley is on the trade block. Not sure if either is true, but if so, I’m scared.

by RedHopeful on Jan 20, 2012 1:03 AM CST up reply actions

yikes

But that would make sense that Beasley is on the trading block, he really doesn’t fit that well on a team with a superb playmaker.

by MZURK on Jan 21, 2012 3:58 AM CST up reply actions

Ha!

I missed the 4th and the OT, but it looked like we played a very good game, but just fell short.

During the parts I watched, I have to say Kaman looked awful. On the other hand, the guys we have behind him are kind of unproven so I can understand Monty’s dilemma, especially since Kaman won’t have much trade value sitting on the bench. I think Ayon has earned at least a quarter of play so it was too bad not to see more of him. Hard to say what the issue is, but it could be all sorts of things. I understand that Ayon doesn’t yet speak English very well so could it be possible he’s having trouble following the game plan during timeouts? I’m just speculating. Anyway, hope to see more of him going forward.

Smith has his issues, but I have a feleing he will be one of the positive development stories this season. I’m becoming increasingly comfortable with the contract that we signed him to ($2.5 mill per year for 3 years). He’s got his jumper (whcih kind of comes and goes, admittedly), but I’ve noticed he’s been trying a little more to put the ball on the floor sometimes. That’s a a good sign because 7 footers who can put the ball on the floor aren’t that common. I have a good feeling about Smith this year, though admittedly he can be frustrating at times.

I understand that Jack might have had some lapses late, but considering his previous game, I’ll give him a bye this game.

Very poor job on Martin in the first half. I was worried he’d get 40+ against us. We definitely shut hium down in the second half though—only 5 points. Who was guarding him? Ariza? I was too distracted to notice.

Belinelli has been playing better as of late… not great, but better.

Aminu… lol. Well good effort at least!

Ariza… not going to get my hopes high, but it’s good while it lasts.

Overall, rockets have been playing well recently (I think this was their 5th straight win?) after a slow start, and we were playing a backto back on the road, so pretty solid effort all things considered.

But alas… same old same old… we fell short.

by MZURK on Jan 19, 2012 11:23 PM CST reply actions

although every loss helps

The draft positioning it’s mad disappointing to see Ayon getting limited minutes and Kaman and Smith getting lots of playing time.

I know a lot of people who watch the games like what they see from Smith but getting my info from recaps and numbers leads me to believe that this losses can probably be largely attributed to Kaman and Smith.

If we go by WP48, a starting line up of the teams best available players would look like

C – Okafor
PF – Ayon
SF – Ariza
SG – Trey Johnson
PG – Jack

Granted the sample size on Johnson and Ayon is tiny but the larger sample size on Kaman and Smith says they are giving negative wins. At least try to see what they can do given minutes, right?

I think we're all overlooking the fact that...

Our Iowa Energy beat Houston’s NBADL affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2011-2012 for the D-League champion’s crown, and is currently sitting at the top of the NBADL’s East Conference! A-ha! Redemption!

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jan 20, 2012 7:31 AM CST reply actions

Aminu needs more playing time

..and Kaman needs less

Also, does any team in the leaague set worse picks, and get called for more offensive fouls, than the Hornets? We were up 5 in overtime, had the ball, and J. Smith gets called for moving screen. Rockets bring ball down the court, miss an awkward shot, Kaman gets beat by Dalembert for the rebound, and fouls him for three point play…You know the rest of the story. Pretty much a human FAIL film.

Credit for playing hard (particularly J Smith), but the team is a turnover machine at crunch time.

agreed!

Aminu needs clock to develop instead of just have sporadic chances to show flashes. C’mon Monty wise up

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jan 20, 2012 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

Moving Screens...

I didn’t watch the game last night, but I have noticed that our bigs are rarely set when setting a screen. They tend to lean and step into the defenders which, in my opinion, is just playing the odds if whether you are going to get called for the foul or not. That is a game I don’t like playing, especially in crunch time!

I’ll repeat that I didn’t watch the game last night, but reading about this game’s lineup is rather disheartening. There were many games last year that I questioned the lineup choices, but I chalked it up with Monty is much smarter than I am and he knows best. But, when it gets to the point that you are questioning decisions every game the game-time experience itself becomes that much less enjoyable. I hope this doesn’t become a trend for Hornets basketball.

by Downtowndave78 on Jan 20, 2012 9:11 AM CST reply actions

As a Rockets fan I feel for you.

The Hornets almost got a win against a very poor playing Rockets team last night. You can not expect much given the Hornet’s owner (DAVID STERN) selling the Hornet fans out. Your GM made a great trade for CP3 but Stern left him hanging and made sure the Hornets will not win in near future. As a former La. Resident, I wish ya’ll luck and hope its not going to take as long to get to winning as it did the Saints.

by arnold p on Jan 20, 2012 10:31 AM CST reply actions

Lol, I think we'll be okay without a couple of aging veteran contracts & a dissatisfied Lamar Odom at the end of the day

The vast majority of us (+/- 75% on ATH’s polls at least) preferred the Clippers trade to Houston’s. The last thing most of us believe the franchise needs is Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and Lamar Odom (seriously, how can you say that looking at how much he misses playing for the purple and gold, that he’s playing just woeful basketball in Dallas). Houston’s unrequited love is much appreciated, but I think we’re better off with EG, Aminu, an expiring contract, and a high-1st draft pick. Thanks but I think we’re okay!

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jan 20, 2012 11:09 AM CST up reply actions

It's all about the long term

And as a savy (is this possible?) business owner, Stern looked for a deal that would most entice new buyers. Short term, yeah, we’re going to have to stomach a lot of gut wrenching losses. However, our best chance for good future ownership AND championship aspirations, a deal as the one consummated with LAC made the most sense.

I do not disagree just meant you would be a lot better NOW.

You are right about better chance in future. I do not think that was the REAL reason for Stern’s veto. If it was, he would have talked to his GM and the deal would have never been made or would have been for younger players.

Monty on Carl Landry
"The way I see it with Carl, a lot of times guys have droughts in the league; the one thing that can’t be affected when you’re playing is your passion and effort," Williams said. "He’s a skilled guy, but he’s best when he’s just out there running around and starting stuff. That’s what we’re trying to get him to be more like that consistently.

"Guys go through stretches where they miss shots, and they’re not playing that well on offense, but we’ve always demanded that our guys defend and play hard. If Carl does those things consistently, he’s going to play, regardless of his offense."

Monty said much less in regards to Thornton last year and always got criticized. Just as I sided with him then, I’m siding with him here. You can’t coddle the best players on the team just because they have the most talent. You have to reward those who play hardest. Sometimes winning is important but the best way to win long term is to develop a system and an expectation of how things are supposed to go organization. I’m with Monty if he’s doing that.

I would agree

..but for the time Kaman is getting…He may play hard, but he does not play smart at all, and I cringe every time he goes into his back to the basket move.
