Hornets: 90 Jazz: 94 A Different Kind Of Bad

The Hornets hit some jump shots tonight and had a chance to tie the game with 16 seconds left, and instead committed their 15th turnover, allowing the Jazz to effectively ice the game. While the Hornets offense was much, much better than it had been in the last two games, the defense slipped noticeably, especially on the inside. Al Jefferson was the main beneficiary of the porous Hornets interior D, scoring 22 points on his variety of unorthodox inside shots. Hornets also could not seem to defend Devin Harris (maybe understandable) or Josh Howard (huh?) without fouling, as the pair of them combined for 18 trips to the line. Jarrett Jack bounced back from an atrocious effort last night in Sacramento, with a big night to the tune of 27 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks(!). Some notes after the jump.

Star-divide

Jason Smith was huge off the bench, starting off the night 4-4 and finishing with 16 points on 8-13 shooting with 8 boards. His defense was not great, but his activity level is ridiculous. He is all over the place at all times when he is on the court. This can be both good and bad, but tonight it resulted in a few extra rebounds and a key block. That jumper is still as sweet as ever, just please stop with the pump-fakes, Jason.

It's a good thing Smith was on fire, because Carl Landry was a complete no-show. 3 points on 3 shots, 3 boards, 2 dimes, and bad defense. When Carl is not scoring, his lack of rebounding and defense makes him a pretty big liability out there. No surprise that Monty only played him 17 minutes, especially with Smith hitting his jumper.

Emeka Okafor started out the game well, scoring on a hook and a short jumper, but was not as successful in the second half. He sat out for quite awhile with Monty going with a Smith-Kaman front court, and didn't seem to get back into the flow of the game well when he returned in the 4th. Monty closed the game with Smith and Kaman. Mek finished with 7 points and 5 boards.

Speaking of Kaman, Chris played the most minutes (28) of any of the bigs, and responded with 14 points on 6-7 shooting and 6 boards. His flat-footed jumper was falling beautifully and he got the rest of his points with tip-ins and post ups. Turnovers continue to be a big problem for Chris, and he finished with 3 tonight. Watching the game, I thought he had more than 3, and could have had many more if not for some lucky bounces. Also, Kaman's defense is not good. He will block a few shots because of his size, but he is caught out of position way too often. I get the feeling that Monty would rather keep Emeka in, for his superior defense, but can't afford to keep Kaman off the floor with the trouble the Hornets have had with scoring. It will be interesting to see how and if their minutes change when Eric Gordon returns.

Marco Belinelli is shooting 24% in the last 3 games, and he has started all of them. He played 36 minutes tonight and shot 2-9 for 6 pts, had 3 boards, and 3 TOs. Eric Gordon can not come back soon enough.

I think this game may quiet the "Start Vasquez." chatter. 0-4, 0 points, 1 assist, 2 TOs, and 2 PFs in 9 minutes. And his actual game looked worse than his box score does.

One bright spot was the much-improve play of Al-Farouq Aminu. He started out slashing aggressively to the basket off the ball and quickly earned two and-1s, and drew a couple more fouls. If he is going to be a factor offensively, this is how he will do it. He finished with 11 points on 3-4 shooting with 1 rebound, a block, a steal, and 1 turnover. By cutting off the ball, he eliminates the need for his biggest weakness, which is dribbling. He attempted two dribble-drives today and one of them resulted in his only turnover. If he can keep scoring on these cuts and keeps up his solid rebounding and defense, he may be able to earn some meaningful minutes this year.

We have to hope that Aminu's progress tonight was real, because Trevor Ariza went down with a groin strain tonight. Trevor has been one of the only consistent performers for the Hornets this year (sounds weird, I know), and things could get ugly if Aminu reverts to his train wreck on roller-skates offense, or if Belinelli doesn't remeber how to shoot soon. At this point, (assuming Gordon plays Wednesday) I'd start Aminu at the 3 and see if he can show us something with some decent minutes. Knowing Monty, we may see Beli start at a 3rd different position this year.

Trey Johnson played 11 minutes, and was not terrible. Monty did yank him after one bad airball and he did not return.

Can't say enough about Jarrett Jack tonight. He made some mistakes, and a few of them were costly late in the game, but this one could have been a blow out without him scoring and finding Smith and Kaman for open jumpers. I know this guy has started for a lot of his career, but I doubt he has ever been asked to shoulder this much of the offensive load, as he has to do for this team while Gordon is out. He is going to have some bad games, and he is going to make a lot of mistakes, but Jack played his but off tonight for 40 minutes, on the second night of a back-to-back. 27-5-11, 2 blocks and only two turnovers. Props to Jarrett for a great bounce-back game.

Hornets look to break this 3 game losing streak at home on Wednesday versus the Sixers, and hope to have Eric Gordon back in the starting lineup. Hopefully his return will energize this team. Happy New Year, everybody. Geaux Hornets.

Good stuff, thanks

Don’t think I’ll have time to rewatch this one, so some q’s for you, Will, or anyone else that wants to jump in:

- what caused Landry to get so few looks? Was it just his defense keeping him out of the game that did it, or was the offense not looking for him too? (kind of felt this was an issue at times in the last game)

- who was finding Aminu on his cuts? LOVE that it sounds like he had a good game. Basketball Prospectus really likes his future (compared to historical players that posted similar stats as rookies) but definitely didn’t see it in those first four games.

- and what position did/does trey johnson play?

Thanks

1. Landry could not finish inside at all. It seems weird because I don’t feel like the Jazz are too imtimidating up front, but Landry got stuffed at least twice and could just not get going offensively. He probably should get a few designed post ups to start every game though. We definitely went to Okafor before him, which is goofy.

I think on the first cut, it was Kaman who found Aminu from the left block. After that I really don’t remember. They did seem to come from the baseline or the paint rther than the top of the key. They seemed to get his confidence going, because he stayed aggressive, though that meant two dribble-drives (one drew a foul and the other was a charge) and a wide open bricked three.

Johnson looks small but I think he is listed as a SG and that is what he played. He had one nice long two, and one bad air ball after he held the ball too long.

Ah interesting

Monty Williams definitely likes him some cursory Emeka isolation postups… almost as much as Jeff Bower did.

Like to hear that it was Kaman finding him… did Amino look good defensively at all? Offensively, his skill set seems eerily similar to Trevor Ariza… slashing to the rim off the ball, poor dribbling, poor shooting, heh.

And Trey Johnson was also a BEAST in the D-League last year apparently (http://www.basketball-reference.com/nbdl/players/j/johnstr01d.html). 31% usage and 110 offensive efficiency! Basically the DLeague Kobe. Whoa.

I agree entirely on Aminu

He is. Still very young and learning his trade. But he is athletic and long. For the first time, the offense incorporated back cuts and lane slashes for Aminu which takes advantage of what he can do and minimizes what he can’t. His opportunities to do so may improve with the return of Gordon to open up the lane.

Belinelli has regressed if that is possible.

Landry was out of sync

Okafor AWOL

Jack committed a couple of turnovers late but played with heart and energy.

Come back soon EG

Jack Bounceback Hero in 3rd Straight Loss

I make it no secret I’m not a fan of Jarrett Jackitup, however, he was fantastic in the Hornets effort.

Another highlight was the play of the bench. Kaman was rugged as usual and Aminu stepped it up. I like Smith’s game. I have a feeling he will play better this year than last. He relaly showed up with a lot of fire in the series against the Lakers.

Be that as it may, there were plenty of low lights as well. Although our bench was fine for a change, our starters (sans Jack) played poorly.

Further, I think this was really just two mediocre teams playing in Divison II of the NBA. Can’t really take away too much positive from this game. Both teams made plenty of mistakes.

I seem to be alone on this...

…but I was not impressed by Jack. Sure, he had good numbers. But so many plays he just dribbled the clock out and then passed it to someone to create. Or ran in circles, couldn’t get through, and dumped it out with little time on the clock. Or, just took it in himself, barreled through double-coverage, and managed to get the shot to fall.

Those things either don’t show up in the box score, or look good, but I don’t see any of those as smart decisions. I’d like to see better ball movement and better decisions from Jack.

I don't know

I saw the guys who can create their own shot (pretty much only Kaman last night), getting the chance to make their moves, while the guys who need shots created for them, Beli, Smith, Mek, everyone else, often got the ball in a position to score. Jack did dominate the ball, but I see that more as out of necessity than by any fault of his. He wasn’t getting those assists off someone else creating a shot after his pass, it was almost entirely catch-and-shoot. Frankly, I have a hard time questioning the decision making of a guy after and 11 assists to 2 turnover night, especially from a guy who is relatively turnover prone. This team has extremely few guys who can get their own shot, and does not have a terribly clever offense to mask those deficiencies. Sure, Jack’s game isn’t the prettiest, and he can make bad decisions, but for a borderline starting PG forced to shoulder such a large percentage of the team’s offense, that was a great game.

not holding my breath

It was a great game by Jack and nice game by Aminu, but defensive intensity by Utah was lukewarm. Utah will probably be one of the worst teams in the West this year.

I’m not holding my breath for a repeat performance.

Further, if we play the same way against a good team, we’ll be soundly beaten. Maybe getting Gordon will help.

We haven’t yet beaten a good team that is playing well, though our win against Boston was quite impressive.

I only watched about 7-8 minutes of the game - the very beginning and end of the game

But I really got the exact same impression re: Jack. Dribbled out about 15 seconds before firing (and having it go in usually)

by Rohan on Jan 3, 2012 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

Growing

Aminu never had a good coach in college – if he can string a few more of these we’ll have a bona fide 1st-round talent on the team. Even though this team’s going to lose a lot, it’s entertaining and fun to see that Monty’s coaching them up well (IMO)/ them go down fighting

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jan 3, 2012 1:31 PM CST reply actions

Solid point

You watched Aminu a good bit in college, right? I recall you making some note about this earlier too

by Rohan on Jan 3, 2012 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I'm a Wake alum, Aminu was recruited by a stellar coach, perhaps the ACC's best in Skip Prosser

but he tragically died of a heart attack, and his assistant – who was an excellent assistant but not cut from HC cloth – was elevated for continuity purposes, was a B- at player development, and Aminu jumped for the draft basically as fast as he could. In my opinion he’s just going to need more time to develop because he left college so prematurely (makes me think of, despite the huge physical, game, and positional differences, of how long it’s taken for DeAndre Jordan to develop – but Farouq will pan out better than DJ in the long-run IMO), we just need to give him tutelage under Monty and consistent (or elevated as the season progresses) enough minutes throughout the season.

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jan 3, 2012 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

Very cool..

Encouraging to hear that about Aminu.

Were you at Wake for either the CP3 or Tim Duncan years?

by Rohan on Jan 4, 2012 3:19 AM CST up reply actions

Some Positives

Was upset about this loss last night. I re-watched it this afternoon after work and took more away from it. Jack played great but, as m-W said, he’s going to have big games every now and then because he dominates the ball so much. But when he’s on, it helps the offense in a big way. More than anything, you can tell he took the Sacramento game personally because his effort was off the charts. I’ve routinely been a big opponent to Jason Smith being on the team, but I’m impressed with his efforts so far in the young season. He’s gotten into better shape and he’s developed into a solid rotation big for the Hornets. Belinelli played awful again but the rest of the starters were alright. I feel like Monty more went with the hot hand than Okafor and Landry having awful nights. Landry, in particular, has been slow to get going this season and he’s a big part of the team. He’s probably the second best offensive option the Hornets have outside of Eric Gordon and his play is huge if he can get it going.

All in all, a definitely fun game but a lot left to be desired by the team. Hopefully Aminu’s showing last night will lead to more sustained production from him. We saw great games off the bench from Pondexter last year that only resulted in complete duds when he had expanded roles either as a starter or as a key reserve with Ariza out. It’s important for Aminu to continue growing; he’s very raw as a player.

Re: Jason Smith

His early season PER is 13.5, up from a career average in the 10s. Not saying he can keep it up, but this is definitely nice to see from him (especially in light of that new contract)

by Rohan on Jan 3, 2012 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

100% right on Landry

I thought he would be averaging around 18ppg for us this year. Really need him to get going. Shouldn’t be a huge adjustment for him as he started a lot of games late in the season, maybe the adjustment is more, not playing with Chris Paul than anything.
