Quick Hornets Updates 1/23 + Some Thoughts
Just a couple quick links from this morning along with an immediate reaction from me:
Jim Eichenhofer of Big Easy Buzz Blog has some quotes from Monty on Gordon from shootaround this morning:
"We’re finding out some stuff. We may not know (additional information) until later on this week. He’s still getting more testing done to make sure the diagnosis is correct. We won’t have any more information until probably Thursday or Friday." Asked what the reasons behind the examinations were, Williams said "he’s getting more testing because he is such a young player, and he’s such an important part of our future. We don’t want to gamble on something and come up wrong later."
Also, Joe Gerrity over at Hornets247 has as-of-yet unconfirmed reports that Eric Gordon has a fractured knee cap. A sample:
Monty Williams hinted two nights ago that Eric Gordon’s knee injury may be a bigger concern than previously disclosed. I’ve heard today that what the team termed a bumped knee may is more likely a fractured knee cap. Here’s why you remain optimistic if that’s the case.
Let me be clear that I haven’t confirmed this.
Update: The Hornets have told me that they do not have that diagnosis yet, and that they are running more tests and should know more later this week, which in no way means it’s not a fracture.
Joe goes on to argue why this wouldn't be the end of the world for the Hornets, and you should go read the rest of his article.
The possibility that Gordon has a serious injury and will miss significant time is definitely depressing for Hornets fans and would almost guarantee a trip to the top 3 or 5 spots in the lottery. If Gordon will indeed be out for awhile, the Hornets need to fully jump on the tank and start getting the younger guys some serious burn as well as trying to find landing spots for the vets that are potentially tradeable. In my opinion, Monty's quote can be interpreted in 1 of 2 ways (provided that Joe's report is accurate): 1) They are conducting more tests to be positive the possible diagnosis of a fractured knee cap is correct before shutting down Gordon for much of the season, or 2) The Hornets are fully aware of a fractured knee cap and are conducting tests to make sure that the injury will not be a long term issue or concern before committing to a 4 or 5 year extension. I suppose there is something to be said for playing the restricted free agent market for a player whose value with undoubtedly drop after not being able to make it through any of his 3 season without missing significant time, but I'd be more comfortable locking Gordon up and never having to deal with any crazy offers from Indiana or any other suitors or risk alienating Gordon with the Qualifying Offer to see him bolt a year later.
The deadline for Gordon to sign an extension is Wednesday, so we should get some news on that front by then. As far the extent of Gordon's injury, we may have to wait until Thursday or Friday before the team will officially say anything. Interesting week ahead of us. Stay tuned.

Considering Gordon was talking openly about signing a long term deal
and that was right when the rumors of the broken knee cap came out, probably a good sign that the parties involved think it’s a broken knee cap.
You Won't See
A huge firesale if Gordon’s out this season. It makes no sense to lock him up to an extension and then trade everyone that would contribute in the future as well. Now, if you can move Landry, Jack or Belinelli or whomever (I’m sure you’re referencing trading Ariza and Okafor as well), then you can go for it. But if you trade everybody, you darned well better have an idea of what you want to do to replace them or else you’re going to be treading water in the next couple of years. As I’ve always said, you want to create a commitment to winning as that dedication and philosophy in the organization is more important than any momentary gain that can be gained by the Hornets. Giving extended playing time to people that aren’t ready for it is a means to halt progression, ruin confidence and promote recklessness defensively for the Hornets and I don’t imagine Monty would go for that. And I wouldn’t be happy with it either.

I am mostly referring to Okafor, Kaman, Landry.
Belinelli is on a one year deal and has no trade value, also we need SOMEONE to play SG even if Henry turns out to be decent. I actually think Jack’s contract is decent and his play has been stellar thus far. I wouldn’t mind hanging on to him. I also think Ariza is a good fit next to Gordon on the wing. The only problem is that he will be getting a little long in the tooth by the time our future draft picks develop into anything. I’m good with keeping both of those guys (Jack and Ariza) beyond this year. Frankly I don’t think the Hornets would ever be able to move all of those guys, even if they wanted to. I think moving two of the veteran bigs (Okafor first) is most important to figure out what we have in Ayon. I’m fine with Aminu getting steady backup minutes behind Trevor.
Giving extended playing time to people that aren’t ready for it is a means to halt progression
I do disagree with that statement, as playing these guys is the only way to know what you have in them going forward. You cannot decide how to build for you future if you don’t know what you have in the present. Regular season minutes cannot be replicated in practice and playing these guys is the only way they will learn to play the game at this level, or be exposed as not NBA quality. There is no reason, in a season like this, to not have a good idea of what you have in every young player on this team.
Agreed
Regular season minutes cannot be replicated in practice
No but they can be earned in practice. And there’s no more concrete way to earn minutes and expanded roles than by competition. That’s what I’m trying to get at.

By the way, before we all go gaga over the draft,
…here is a partial list of draft disappointments from 2005 to 2010
Adam Morrison, Tyrus Thomas, Shelden Willams, Patrick O’Bryant, Andrea Bargnani, Saer Sene, Michael Oden; Yi Jianlian; Corey Brewer; Spencer Hawes; Michael Beasley; Gallinari; Joe Alexander; Jonny Flynn; Jordan Hill; Demar DeRouzan; Terrence Williams; Ekpe Udoh; Greg Monroe.. All top 10 picks, and in the case of Bargnani and Oden, the first pick in the draft.
These names are 40% of the players picked 1 through 10 in each of the five years n the sample. For every Chris Paul, there are three Ekpe Udohs or Adam Morrisons.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of having two potentially high number 1 picks. But given how raw many of these kids are when they come out after 1 year of college, and the relative certainty that some picks will be busts, I would not bet my entire ranch on building through this model. Guys like Kidd-Gilchrist or the other kid from Kentucky have a lot of promise, but so did Tyrus Thomas. And that promise never developed.

You're exactly right
But the draft is a gamble you have to win, if you’re a small market team. No other ways out of the cellar.
Or at least
out of the cellar and into legitimate contention status.
You can certainly overpay a free agent or two that will vault you into that 9-6 seed range indefinitely.
Um
some of those guys on your list definitely are not disappointments. Gallo, Monroe. Few others appear to finally be getting it Hawes, Bargs. Still have hope for DeRozan too.
Spencer Hawes looks great this year as well
and Tyrus Thomas played some pretty good ball last year.
I agree that not all were busts
..but none were transformative players either… Not IMO even Monroe..Toronto still is awful with a bunch of lottery picks over the last few years…same with the Wizards.
I am not arguing against the draft. For a small market team it is the only way…Maybe we get lucky like OK CIty (although I do not see anyone close to Durant in this year’s draft), maybe we don’t. Just saying that we need to be realistic about what the draft can do and may not do. I might be more excited if I saw someone of Durant’s ability coming out, or a Derrick Rose or even a Jrue Holliday…but so far, I have been underwhelmed on the collegiate front.

Gordon Out For Year
Been thinking we only do well in the race to the bottom if Gordon didn’t come back & we have Belli starting. I thought he (Gordon) would need knee surgery. Maybe malingering meniscus matter. Forgive me.
I want X-man to be good, a real steal. On the other hand, that screws up what I view as a cinch top 5 pick w/Belli. So we might be better off if X still can’t shoot.
