Heat 109, Hornets 95: "With the first 5 picks in the 2012 NBA draft the New Orleans Hornets select... The Kentucky Wildcats"

A longish headline tonight, via BobbyO504 on the Twitter machine (hey, you there, follow me! I'm like the Pied Piper of cool). On a night like this, it's our only respite.

The Hornets were never going to defeat the Wade-James HEAT, not even after assembling a rather astonishing offensive first quarter. Miami gradually clamped down defensively, making sure to sprinkle in an assortment of plays for the highlight reel and was in full control of the game by the third quarter. At that point, all we had to amuse ourselves with was the pronunciation of Marco Belinelli by the HEAT broadcast team, Monty Williams denying us the sublime pleasures of Gustavo Ayon until it was too late.

Another night, another loss. Welcome to the new era of Hornets basketball.

Star-divide

That first quarter was especially notable for its offensive balance; players made themselves available with regularity on off-ball cuts, and it resulted in early baskets for all five starters. Slowly but surely, it all fizzled out of course. Even the introduction of Carl Landry failed to prevent the inevitable denouement into the Jarrett Jack dribble-dribble-dribble-shot clock violation offense we're grown to despise with every fiber of our collective existence.

Emeka Okafor and Carl Landry were our two best offensive players, so naturally they took a combined 15 shots. Okafor missed just once (an open key jumper if I recall correctly) and Landry twice. Meanwhile, Trevor Ariza took it upon himself to miss 8 of his 12 shots. I don't believe it premature to eulogize the "new Trevor Ariza" we all wanted to believe in so desperately only two weeks ago. The new Trevor Ariza is the old Trevor Ariza who is not the old, old Trevor Ariza. A brief stats/melancholy interlude, if you'll allow it:

Age (Offensive Efficiency)

23 (112)
24 (99)
25 (97)
26 (96)

This was a downward trend a Chris Paul offense couldn't change, and it sure as heck isn't something Jarrett Jack will reverse.

Okay, before you step off that ledge - Gustavo Ayon. He can ball. He's got the midrange game, he sets strong screens, he has great awareness of offensive positioning, and his rebounding is solid (even if it wasn't great tonight). He's quite literally the most watchable aspect of this grisly season from hell, the effervescent braids of Squeaky Johnson his only competition.

And back to the regularly scheduled misery. Miami was especially destructive in transition this evening, and it wasn't turnover fueled. New Orleans gave it away on just 13% of possessions (by our standards, heavenly), but Miami simply found a way to run off of missed and even made shots. Both of LeBron's one-man fastbreaks in the third quarter were fueled by defensive rebounds he collected and simply never gave up. And Miami's transition rendered the one place where the Hornets had a vague, infinitesimally tiny advantage - the offensive glass - a complete failure. New Orleans gathered just 4 offensive boards on the night (a 12% rate compared to their 29% on the year) and it was clearly more due to design than a lack of effort.

And that, essentially, was that. The march to the 2012 draft lottery where, if we get lucky in terms of the odds, a coin flip will determine the future of the franchise continues steadily onwards.

Wonder

How long before we see a change to the starting lineup.

Monty

Hasn’t been afraid to shake things up. I don’t know who on the bench deserves to start, though (although we know people on the bench need to play more minutes).

Had To Say

We all kind of saw this coming. Not too much the Hornets can do in this situation in that environment against that team. Unfortunately, they played good enough in the first half to keep me emotionally invested.

I love Monty… but all I know is if I’m paying over 200 bucks to watch our last place Hornets come to San Antonio this Thursday then he better at least give me the satisfaction of watching Gustavo Ayon more than he did the past two games!

Destroyed on the Boards

Since we’ve sat Kaman, we’ve been getting destroyed on the glass.

Kaman was playing badly on offense, but he was one of our top 2 guys in rebounds per minute.

Maybe

But, come on. 1-3 without him. 3-14 with him.

I wouldn't be surprised

To see the Hornets go 2-12 in the next 14 games without him as well.

Right

I don’t know what that recent blowout win was about, but I think the slide is only deepending at this point…

I dont think starting matters, in the since everyone gets about equal minutes

No one over 30. I honestly think if you look at someone like Rubio who might have 14 points and 12 dimes in 38 minutes, that Vasquez could do the same. Not just looking at projections but looking at more time for more better basketball to a cure. How do coaches analyze players with 20 minutes a night. For instance if we took Aminu’s one game with REAL starter minutes that line is better then anything Trevor has thrown up. Someone please explain to me how you can make a sound judgement on how a player will pan out without giving them a real start. Give Ayon 38 minutes and his numbers will be all star guarantee it.

Oh well.

It was awesome for a quarter and a half. Other than that, more Ayon please.

¡I agree, más Gustavo Ayon!

Ricky Rubio, Pau & Marc Gasol, Jose Calderon, Catalan and Spanish players’ track record has been great this year. Plus, it can get our burgeoning Hispanic community more involved with the team, which would be great just because, to bring more noise to the Hive, and potentially attractive for new ownership as a new and emerging market(?) ¡Más Ayon!

Anybody miss CP3

…like I do? Watching Jarrett Jack try to play the position is like watching Robin Williams in a dramatic role. Great effort, but too many stumbles and pratfalls to be considered a great performance.

Jack is not horrible, he is just a painful reminder of how much we lost when CP3 left the territory. Sigh…

frankly?

No not really. Don’t miss him at all. As mediocre as Jack can be (and I’m rarely a fan of Jack), I don’t miss CP.

Anyway, Jack has actually played better than I feared he might so far this year. He’s controlling his turnovers somewhat and providing occasional scoring bursts. That’s about all you can hope for from him.

Is that because you are bitter at his leaving..

or just did not care for his style of play?

bitter?

I’ve seen so many stars come and go for the Hornets during the last 20 years that I’m very much used to it now. CP was just another star, a star with a lot of potential, but just another star.

In any case, I was neverer a fan of the PG-first offense (unforetunately we have the same with Jack at the moment) and I consider CP to be just one of the top point guards and not necessarily the best in the game.

Yeah

I miss him but I’ve seen him play plenty in a LAC uniform. Lucky bastards – still can’t believe how many of their fans + experts were crying about the Clips giving up too much.

by RedHopeful on Jan 31, 2012 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

absolutely. I can't believe they traded away Al FAROOK Aminu

for that two-first-names guy.

I miss him but I like the challenge of rebuilding the team for long term success

We had problems surrounding him with talent and I don’t know how much success we could’ve had in the long term just by having one superstar and then a lot of mediocre talent at other positions. I would rather spend money and be talented at multiple positions than spend a large of money on just one player.

I was at the watch party last night

And started laughing when that RT came through. Couldnt stop. Shared it with my neighbors who I didnt know. They laughed. Said it to the Buzzpatrol inthe parking lot. They laughed too.

Since I never expected us to beat the Heat, last night was ‘chocolate’.
