Eric Gordon a Gametime Decision, Trevor Ariza Out

The Commish has seen Marco Belinelli deputize rather horrifically for him for the past few games; will he make his home regular season debut tonight?

Over at the official Hornets site, Jim Eichenhofer says Gordon is "questionable" for the game. What does this mean? Who knows!

Trevor Ariza is officially out though, courtesy of a strained right groin.

----

And now for a quick Q&A with noted burrito enthusiast Mike Levin of Liberty Ballers:

What's Good With Philly?

The Sixers have a young core that seems like, barring apocalypse or Willie Green, they will improve together. Jrue Holiday hasn't shown it yet, but he may be the best basketball player of all time, or at least a second tier point guard just behind the likes of Deron Williams and David Stern's plaything, Chris Paul. Evan Turner has already been better than last season after working with a shooting coach in the offseason to improve his awkward jumper. Iguodala and Hawes have been shooting out of their minds and, as much as it makes my eyes twinkle watching it, there's no chance it holds up. Lou Williams shoots a lot and I try not to stab myself in the face. Doug Collins is a nice fellow. The owners seem super pumped.

What's Bad with Philly?

Well, what's the point? Without a complete stud scorer, this team will never get past the second round and mediocrity doesn't breed winners, it just sets you back 5 years. An inability to pull the trigger on an Iguodala trade and Elton Brand's amnesty keeps them just good enough to make the playoffs and avoid a good lottery pick in a sick wit it draft. Though a Clipper-esque losing atmosphere could condemn the team for a while, there's no doubt in my mind that a fire sale of everyone not named Jrue and Evan (there are only two players on the team with those names) and going 0-66 this season would be more beneficial for the franchise than the impending 6 seed. Woe is me, at least everyone can speculate about how much this team needs Lou Williams and his 28% usage rate.

I'm live from the media room at the Arena

Let’s get a good game thread going this time.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 6:21 PM CST reply actions

Yes!

I’m gonna be out of the game thread for the second time in a row, but I fully expect us to crack 100 this time!

Hopefully watching the game

if leaguepass broadband finally works. Anybody know any special tricks for that?

by Huang Feng on Jan 4, 2012 7:00 PM CST reply actions

OK guys

I’m now live from sec 117 directly above the BeeZanies. Al-Farouq Aminu gets the start for the injured Ariza. Eric Gordon returns to the starting lineup and is introduced last to a good ovation.

Added in a SUPER LATE Q&A with Mike Levin of Liberty Ballers

into the post.

And now I’m out for real.

Talk to y’all some time tonight. Maybe I’ll liveblog my tape delay viewing in the comments of Will’s post game recap!

Al-Farouq Aminu is bad at dribbling.

Gordon has started out on a tear

and the Sixers are ice cold. Hornets need to build a solid need now.

17-10 Hornets

with 5:05 left in the first. Good play from Jack, Landry, and especially Gordon, who is perfect from the field in 4 attempts.

Sixers are all jump shots right now

Can’t tell if it’s the Hornets D or just laziness.

Hornets lead 27-16 after one.

Eric Gordon has been an absolute monster. Best player on the floor and it’s not close.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 7:36 PM CST reply actions

Love the BeeZanies

but man some of these chants are corny.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 7:36 PM CST reply actions

Rejected!

Jason Smith with the block then runs the floor for a layup on the other end.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 7:39 PM CST reply actions

Defense has definitely relaxed

Sixers are getting to the rim with relative ease.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 8:04 PM CST reply actions

That lead didn't last long

Eric Gordon just broke a 48 all tie with a tough drive and banker.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 8:31 PM CST reply actions

Hornets interior D is Downy soft

and it’s leading to wide open shots all over the place now.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 8:42 PM CST reply actions

Very good game

for a change. Should be a good finish

by RedHopeful on Jan 4, 2012 9:00 PM CST reply actions

Yep

The no defense thing in the second half helps with that I suppose.

Gordon is plus 13

Don’t believe 100% in plus/minus. NO is lots better with the Commish on the floor.

Due to band practice. Looks like Gordon is being a stud tonight.

I hope the Hornets can pull this one off

I really like these young Sixers

Hope to see our FO surround Gordon with young agile talent.

by RedHopeful on Jan 4, 2012 9:07 PM CST reply actions

Jack with 3 big plays in a row

then the Hornets give up an open 3 to Holiday. Can’t get over the hump.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 9:10 PM CST reply actions

Okafor comes up with a loose ball all alone under the basket

and can’t manage to dunk it home before being fouled. He’ll go to the line with the Hornets trailing 92-87 with 2:22 left on the clock.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 9:12 PM CST reply actions

Gordon's 3s not falling.

Maybe Graevis should’ve been in guarding Holiday?

by RockyMountain on Jan 4, 2012 9:21 PM CST reply actions

Hmm

To me it seems jack is good until about 4 minutes left in the game, then he creates turnovers. Still a good night from him and Gordon. Belli has to stop getting minutes it’s sad. Trey looks better as the back up 2 guard. Smith is playing good for us as is Kaman good scoring from your back up big men. Aminu didn’t drive at all this game wish he would have everyone else was. 76ers had no injuries so this team has been playing together allot longer then the hornets line up.

by 247_Hornet on Jan 4, 2012 9:29 PM CST reply actions

It's not just they have no injuries, they're also athletic all over, from

the guards to the center. All quick fast guys that can get back anywhere on the court they want. Really a scary team.

by RockyMountain on Jan 4, 2012 9:31 PM CST reply actions

Looks more and more like Hornets

…will have good shot of snagging two of the top 5 picks at this rate.

by BenDerDonDat on Jan 4, 2012 9:49 PM CST reply actions

Jack is not a point guard. I think he needs to be the back up shooting guard.

He does not create space for anyone, his assist come from last minutes shoots that happen to go in. The only play he runs that creates space is the pick in pop with Smith, which worked very well the last game. I think they did it twice this game. It’s almost like Monty thinks nice game now let someone else try to get there’s. Which in reality you should go back to that play or player over and over again until it does not work anymore. Also Vasquez is a better PG then jack just not a really good shooter. (well from the sporadic non rhythmic building shots he does gets.)

by 247_Hornet on Jan 4, 2012 9:56 PM CST reply actions

I'm sorry

but you don’t have 10+ assists on back-to-back nights by creating a few shots “that happen to go in.” Jack may not be a perfect pure point, but those are few and far between. If this team starts Vasquez over Jack, the tanking has truly begun. Vasquez may be a better passer than Jack, but he is by no means a better PG. He shoots worse, defends worse, and turns the ball over more. I like Vasquez fine as a backup point who likes to push the pace, but Jack is a much superior player right now.

by Will H. on Jan 4, 2012 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

Yes jack is such a good defender.

Let see J Holiday gave him a new asshole in the fourth quarter alone. But hey a guy 5 inches taller with more hops could defend those three’s better huh. Most of Jacks assist come from bail out shoots.

by 247_Hornet on Jan 4, 2012 10:09 PM CST up reply actions

I Remember

Players like Jrue Holiday and Jose Calderon going off big on the Hornets last year. I guess that means Chris Paul’s not a good defender…

by MrWayneKeller on Jan 4, 2012 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

Plus

Don’t fault Jack for his shortcomings on defense when you’re defending Vasquez. You say what Jack does wrong as if Vasquez can do it better.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Jan 4, 2012 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

In a nutshell...

Its not that entertaining to watch… I’m as optimistic as the next fan but when you SEE things…. Beli and Kaman are defensive liabilities. Kaman’s shortcomings defensively can be overlooked some because he contributes on the offensive although those two traveling charges in a row early in the game left a bad taste in my mouth. Aminu….. What can I say? Needed more college seasoning because he’s really NOT ready. Jack….stop turning the ball over….Okafor please make FTs! And not just him… Its almost like “hack a Hornet” because w/exception of Jack and sometimes Gordon & Landry, the team sucks at FTs. There’s alot more but not really feeling like writing a disertation. PS… Vaszuez is NOT a better PG than Jack. Jack is a better penetrator shooter and defender. Beli & Vasquez kept getting beat trying to guard their man.

by fshabazz on Jan 4, 2012 9:58 PM CST reply actions

Also if you go back and look at the tape,

Jack never gave Gordon the ball until really late in the shot clock giving bad positioning and spacing, Gordon constantly had to create something out of nothing. Maybe it was like that because this is there first game together. I will wait for about a month before I say anything else on the matter.

by 247_Hornet on Jan 4, 2012 10:19 PM CST reply actions

Kaman is outplaying mek and has only been in the system for 6 games.

by spider21 on Jan 5, 2012 4:50 AM CST reply actions

Another thing, Holiday got like 3 3pters late in the game.

Jack needs to do a better job. I think a taller Vasquez would’ve been better because it will give the opposing PG more problem. Whoever EJ guards on defense will be taken out of the game. i.e. Meeks early on, and AI in the 4th.
