Hornets 89 Cavs 84: Ash Winsday
I really apologize for channeling my inner Gil with the title. The Hornets beat the Cavaliers tonight behind some solid defense, good inside play, and poor shooting from Cleveland. Marco Belinelli and Jarrett Jack were money from mid-range while Kaman and Ayon scored inside. Kaman and Ayon combined for 30 points and 30 rebounds, as the pair dominated the glass. Hornets won despite the fact that their best player as of late, Trevor Ariza, failed to make a field goal in 20 minutes before leaving the game with a possible lower back injury. Player notes and random thoughts after the jump.
Obviously I'm starting with my favorite Hornet, Gustavo Ayon. Even this guy's mistakes look like good ideas. When he adjusts to the speed and length of NBA players, watch out. Goose (Fine, I give.) finished with 9 points on 7 shots and 17(!) rebounds (6 offensive). After getting beat several times by Antawn Jamison in the first half, Goose looked like he figured out Antawn's unorthodox game a little bit , as the former All-Star finished with 22 points on 22 shots. Ayon's 17 boards are tied for a team high this season, and he also chipped in 4 assists, 2 steals, and a block. The pass I loved the most didn't even get Ayon an assist, as he grabbed a tough rebound in traffic and threw a perfect outlet pass to a streaking Jarrett Jack who was grabbed from behind to prevent the layup. That is not a pass I'm used to Hornet big men making. No question in my mind that Ayon has the highest basketball IQ on the team.
Goose's partner in the post tonight, Chris Kaman, finished with a great line of 21 points and 13 rebounds, grabbing several clutch rebounds late in the fourth. However, as we've come to expect from Kaman, his 21 points came on 25 shots and he complimented all those bricks with 4 turnovers. Despite the crazy number of attempts from Kaman, I was relatively happy with his game, as he was an impact defensively throughout the game. The guy is huge and alters shots in a way the Emkea Okafor, despite probably being a better shot-blocker), cannot. That combined with his showing on the glass and his 3 assists earn him a passing grade in this guy's book.
Greivis Vasquez started again and was successful on a few of his drives, hit a three, and had a few of his normal slick passes to get to his 11 points and 5 assists. Unfortunately he committed 5 turnovers in the 4th quarter alone, in what looked to be an apparent attempt to please those among you who are cheering for lottery balls instead of wins right now. Before that stretch, Vasquez was playing solid basketball, but more turnovers than assists for your starting PG is unacceptable. Hopefully he can consistently be the guy in quarters 1-3 because....
I'm starting to like Jarrett Jack off the bench, especially considering the sorry excuse for a second unit the Hornets have been trotting out lately. With offensively challenged wings and D-Leaguers making up the front line, Jack's ability to get his own shot repeatedly kept the Cavs at arm's length. His flat-footed floater is a thing of beauty. Letting Jack handle the ball for most of the possession only dumping to someone else to finish, eliminates the need for any of the aforementioned guys from trying to create anything off the dribble. Jack's two baskets in the final two minutes helped put this one out of reach.
Marco Belinelli had a great offensive game despite not making a 3-pointer until the final minute of the game. Instead of bombing from deep, Marco did his best Rip Hamilton impersonation, nailing several mid-range jumpers off a series of screens. He finished with 18 points on 8-13 shooting. Not sure where this guy has been up until February, but at his current production, this guy is worth every penny of the contract he got this summer. If he plays like this for the rest of they year, he'll earn another nice contract whether it is in New Orleans or elsewhere.
Now some bad news. Trevor Ariza, who has been nothing short of amazing this month, went down with an apparent lower back injury with 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd. I believe he was injured while taking a charge from Kyrie Irving. Before going down, Trevor was not playing up to his recent level, missing all 6 of his FG attempts, though he did have an unsurprising 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Hopefully the injury was nothing serious (for once this season), and Trevor is 100% after the All-Star break. Get some rest, Trevor. You deserve it.
Al-Farouq Aminu played some decent minutes, including a nice dunk on a dump off pass from Jack. He's been getting one of those in almost every game recently. More please. He had a really nice hook shot in the post that surprised me, and finished with 6 points on 7 shots (I can't remember 7 shots). I'm becoming convinced that Aminu may never develop the perimeter skills to be a decent SF in the NBA, but could actually turn into a decent backup PF off the bench. He has the length, and actually looks almost the exact same size as Antwan Jamison.
Xavier Henry is aggressive and plays good defense, but cannot dribble with his right hand or shoot at all.
Solomon Jones and Lance Thomas are still playing for this team. Okafor, Smith, and Landry can't come back soon enough (though not at the expense of Ayon).
Kyrie Irving shot 2-13, but finished with 11 assists to 2 turnovers. He's a keeper. Even on an off night, I was impressed.
That's it. I've decided that I am not capable of rooting for losses, so I'm just gonna go with the flow for the remainder of the season. If the Hornets win, cool. If they lose, cool (after an hour or so). If i was really all-in for operation tank, there's no way I could actually watch the games. This team plays WAY too hard for me to hope for them to lose. Monty has done a great job with this group, and I'm about as happy as I could be with the job that the coach of an 8 win team is doing.
Be sure to check out the All-Star weekend festivities where absolutely none of your Hornets will be appearing. Whatever, they earned the rest, and we all know Gustavo Ayon got absolutely hosed in the Rising Stars game.

I think it’s taking him a while to figure out his shot, but when he does, they’ll fall. As far as right hand dribbling, that can be fixed with practice.

Curious
how the rotation will play out after the All-star break as Mek and Smith will be back. Hard to imagine Ayon goes back to some insignificant role so one has to think Smith becomes his backup. Also, with Kaman showcasing himself rather well, do the Hornets put him on the bench behind Mek again? I for one actually hope not. Let the team keep playing well and as a bonus hopefully Kaman brings in a good return in the near future.
Interesting Idea
To have Jarrett Jack come off of the bench after the All Star Break. It’s a nice concept although I’m not sure that Monty would really go for it. Vasquez has, though, played really well since being put into the starter’s role and this team is just a joy to watch. I’m serious. They may not be the most talented bunch, but they’re a bunch of professionals and I love watching Monty Williams on the sideline and watching this team play ball night in and night out.
As for the rotations after the break. I imagine Ayon will continue to start (a great game to close out the first half of the season helps, too) and that would put Smith and Kaman on the bench. Okafor won’t come off of the bench and he shouldn’t. Predicating minutes based on a return for Kaman shouldn’t be the organization’s top priority as he’s been showcased plenty here in the last couple of weeks. It’s actually not a bad front court rotation; especially with Landry in there. Of course, Landry could very well be traded by the deadline (his injury does put that into question though). But we’re all just speculating.
In the moment… I’m just going to enjoy this victory on Winsday.

The big man rotation going forward will be interesting.
Starting Ayon and Okafor seems to clog up the middle on offense as neither is a floor-spacer, so maybe continue to start Smith while Kaman is still around. After the potential Kaman trade you would have to think that Smith moves to backup C and Ayon and Landry split time at the 4. Despite Kaman’s shortcomings on offense, I actually like him paired with Ayon. Of course Ayon probably has the smarts to play with anyone out there, we’ve just seen him play well with Kaman more recently.
I know
a lot of guys like Smith but I really don’t miss him. He spends way too much time shooting jumpers and not enough time getting rebounds, especially for a seven footer. As for clogging the middle, that’s what movement is for, right? And Ayon is an awesome passer. I say start Okafor and Ayon and let the least worst of the rest come off the bench (until they upgrade).
Kaman as a starter...
I think I prefer Kaman as a starter, but it would be interesting to see how Ayon plays with Okafor. I also don’t think Smith is going to take Ayon’s starting job away from him. Ayon has just done too much to warrant a start as compared to Smith. But Monty has surprised me in the past…

Yeah It's Interesting
Because Monty has ALWAYS had a thing for Jason Smith. He really likes him for some reason. I wouldn’t be surprised if Monty eventually puts Ayon on the bench. And I’m fine with that so long as he still gets around 20-25 minutes a game. He’s, at least, deserved that consistently.

I've never really liked
Williams’s thing for Smith but it is REALLY easy to fall in love with a 7 foot PF who blocks well and doesn’t turn the ball over.
I really like the idea of Okafor and Ayon together, they’re the team’s two best at those positions and, the team’s most efficient scorers from the floor (and Okafor has added moves) BUT it is worrisome to think about the Pau Gasols, Howards, and Bynums of the league …
And now that I think about it, for some reason Okafor’s rebounds and blocks are down from last year … But maybe this is due to playing with Kaman, Smith and Landry (instead of West) and playing with Ayon fixes that ?
I’m curious too to see how it plays out …

Jack off the bench
Monty was quoted after the game:
http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/news/quotes_hornets_120222.html
(Jarrett) Jack isn’t all that happy about it, but I’m keeping him on the bench because he gives us scoring off the bench and I’ll explain that to him later.
He Struggled
A lot in that role last year and I don’t really know if it’s for the best long term. But then again, they need him to score off the bench. I’m sure Monty will give it a trial and we’ll see how it works out.

Jack's pick and roll...
I really like Jack but he seems to never pass it to is teammates when running plays. I wish he would utilize his teammates more when running pick & pop/rolls.

Before his injury
His numbers running the PnR were ridiculously good. Certainly can’t pass as well as Vasquez, but he was using it to get his shot, and he was crazy efficient at getting them to go down.
Your Comments on Irving
Yeah he can really play. He’s going to be a great player in the league. I actually really like Tristan Thompson a lot as well. I’m curious as to why Byron Scott won’t really expand his role. I know he can’t really play any offense but neither can Ryan Hollins. Thompson has been a solid rebounder this year and block shots at a nice clip as well. The Cavaliers made good with their two lottery picks from this past year. Kudos to them and their future.

I know next to nothing about Thompson
but John Krolik was on the 247 blog the other day and he really did not seem to like Thompson or that pick at all.He didn’t elaborate, but I caught the feeling he didn’t think Byron was pulling some grave injustice with Thompson’s minutes.
Kaman is an asset in the worst way...
Kaman’s game is based on the law of averages. All players have TO’s & missed shots but when you have NO other options(because of injuries, we don’t), then Kaman goes from liability to asset. 21 pts off 25 attempts?…. Only because we won, it don’t seem like that big of an issue. If Okafor & Smith were playing, his stat line would prob read 7pts/5 Rebs. Are some forgetting that the game before he grabbed 2 Rebs in 38 mins. I was a big Kaman fan when he was w/LAC but I see why they had no prob letting him go.
Henry prob needs time like Vaquez had to develop

Question
Let’s assume Hornets take point guard in draft this year? Whom do you keep? Vasquez or Jack. I say Jack coming off bench is better option, but interested in views of others.
"I've seen George Foreman shadow box, and the shadow won." Muhammad Ali
Vasquez.
Younger, bigger, still geting better, cheaper. J-Jack would be a 5 million a year backup. I’d keep both next season so J-Jack can mentor the new guy, but, then he’d get traded.

Jack
Without question. Long story short, he’s the better player. Plus he could mentor the new guy.
But I don’t think the Hornets go PG in the upcoming draft.

I've actually been thinking of Wroten to NOLA myself
don’t know if he is developed enough though. (I’ve heard he’s got great court vision but I don’t get to see a lot of college ball.)
You've Been
Wanting Wroten to New Orleans. That doesn’t mean he’s on the team’s radar. I see him as more of a late first rounder myself.

Personally I want someone that can/score shoot.
I like Wroten and Marshall but a ton of guys come into the league and never develop a consistent jumper. Now you can still be an effective player without ont (Rondo, Andre Miller), but I feel like it may be easier to teach passing/PG skills than fixing a shot. Recently, I’m intrigued by Damian Lillard out of Weber State. Good size, speed, scores in bunches from all over the court, and his shooting numbers are great. Also, from what I’ve read, he’s great in the PnR which is a huge part of the NBA and the Hornets offense. Crappy competition so it’s tough to judge him right now, but I’m interested (and according to Chad Ford, so are the Hornets). The big question mark is whether he can play PG, as he is the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd scoring option in college, so it would require an adjustment for sure.
Yes, I've been wanting him
I just think he fits well. NO, I wouldn’t use a lottery pick on him, unless he goes crazy in March and the combine. I see him in the 16-24 range. Hopefully a pick we get from Kaman puts us their, and we can fill other holes with the Minny pick. Maybe Quincy Acy? Perry Jones III if his stock keeps falling? Thereare sure to be good players in the late lottery.

It also depends on who we take.
Wroten – Scoring guard. Vasquez is the better passer of the two.
Kendall Marshall – passing first guard. J-Jack is the better scorer of the two.

I say keep Vasquez
for the reasons onepoint stated and honestly, Jack is at best an average PG. I like Jack but Vasquez is better and in my opinion should start no question. I’d like to see both around though but if I had to choose I’m going Vasquez no question.
If Jack Is
At best average, why are you clamoring for Vasquez? He’s already 25, it’s not as if he’s got this incredibly high ceiling he’s yet to match.
Not being confrontational, just asking.

I like Vasquez
But I don’t really get all the love he gets from a ton of Hornets fans. He’s a below average athlete, shooter, and defender. His one NBA skill is his great passing, but he hurts that with his high turnover rate. He’s a good guy, and plays his but off, but he’s too flawed at this point to ever be a serious consideration for a starting PG.
About
How I feel. I really do like Vasquez, I just don’t think he’s any better than Jarrett Jack.

As far as why
I think they are both average to slightly below average scoters. Vasquez takes fewer shots so that goes in his favor. Vasquez also makes more assists so those shots he doesn’t take, are turned into points. He sees the floor well and is a willing passer. The more efficient scorers he’s on the floor with, the better he gets. (less shooting more assists)
He’s not as good a rebounder as Jack (he’s not terrible … about average, Jack is above average), they both are good defensive rebounders but Jack’s are more likely to turn into inefficient shots for himself.
Vasquez turns the ball over too much (he’s above average in number of turnovers while Jack is below) but he balances that with being very good at stealing the ball (with his low athleticism I’m going to attribute this to Basketball IQ and size). Plus I think his turnovers will come down smarter players and another year.
Age wise, Vasquez is close to his peak but I feel like his game is based on brains more than brawn (and he’ll always be tall) so it’ll age well.
That’s why I like him as a starter now and into the future. Don’t know about other fans.

Thats why trading for Roddy B out of Dallas is a good idea....
We get a good young PG who shows more flashes of greatness than Jack. The sad part is I really like Jack but he does hold onto the ball too long. Maybe the guy(s) he’s supposed to pass the ball to is late coming to him but it’s happening too much.

If it was Kaman for Roddy + a good piece
I’d take it, but for Roddy + dead, expensive weight? No thanks.

I say cut our loses & get a C In the draft....
Since Okafor & Smith are coming back after the all star break, trade Kaman for Roddy B & maybe a young Big & use our pick for a top flight Big. Now for CP3 we got a starting PG, Gordon, & Aminu PLUS a top flight BIG coming. Not bad w/Ariza & his defense and Ayon.

Teams making that push for the playoffs should be hitting Demps now… Almost feel like draft time…

Still gonna be a positive....
It really doesn’t matter who makes the deal because based on our team, Kaman’s value to a playoff team will still warrant a positive trade/pick for us to payoff next season. C’mon Roddy B….
