Hornets Waive Squeaky Johnson, DaJuan Summers
Per CBS Sports' Ken Berger, the New Orleans Hornets have waived Squeaky Carldell Johnson and DaJuan Summers.
NBA contracts became fully guaranteed on Friday (a full list of all non-guaranteed players across the NBA can be found on the SBNation NBA page).
Johnson and Summers would have earned a combined $1.3M between the two of them. Summers has been used largely as a utility player till this point, playing at multiple positions and even starting six times due to injuries to other players. While Squeaky had seen increased minutes lately due to the absence of Jarrett Jack, his minutes as a third string point guard had been very inconsistent throughout the year.
That said, both players certainly had clearly defined (if minimal) roles with the team, with very limited financial commitment required to retain them. So the next question, naturally, is whether either move (or both) precedes another transaction, perhaps one involving Chris Kaman.
Including the 10-day contract recently signed by Lance Thomas, the Hornets were at the roster limit of 15 players before today - Jarrett Jack, Greivis Vasquez, Squeaky Johnson, Eric Gordon, Marco Belinelli, Xavier Henry, Trevor Ariza, Al-Farouq Aminu, DaJuan Summers, Carl Landry, Jason Smith, Lance Thomas, Emeka Okafor, Gustavo Ayon, and Chris Kaman.
So the current roster size now falls to 13, allowing the Hornets to potentially take back extra players in a Kaman deal, making something alone the lines of our hypothesized Houston Rockets deals (Jordan Hill, Hasheem Thabeet, draft pick) a possibility. Keep in mind, though, that even if these cuts were made with a trade in mind, we may still be a couple weeks away from a Chris Kaman trade. By cutting Squeaky and Summers today, the Hornets saved themselves at least a little bit of cash, something that can't be underrated for a team that doesn't have an owner.

NOT SQUEAKY!!!!!!
Hes a local! And hes my twitter avatar!
Thi sPart of the Game is Unfortunate
I never get used to it. I’ve been open in how much I don’t like Summers getting playing time and things like this just make me feel guilty for hating these players so much during a game. This is not only their profession… this is their dream. Nobody could have been happier about making the Hornets than Squeaky Johnson and it’s just a shame to see him get cut. These things are a blip on the radar to most people but they really stick with me.
I wish them both all the best.

MWK
you’ve got a big heart. I can never get this worked up over stuff like this for one reason or another. Guess I just don’t see this as a profession comparable to almost all others in the world. It’s more like a lottery and they simply were that much closer to winning it than you or I.
That's Fair
It’s more like a lottery and they simply were that much closer to winning it than you or I.
That seems to be the best way to put it. But I always get emotionally invested in certain players on the team and I have no idea why. I’ve been vocal in how much it hurt me to see Julian Wright and Hilton Armstrong (two big favorites of mine) flame out in the pros. I just randomly like certain players and it just really bothers me to see people fail. I didn’t have that kind of emotional investment in either Johnson or Summers but it’s still disappointing for it to happen. Although, for the ultimate betterment of the team, it’s probably necessary. And in about a week or so I’ll get over it, I just hate to see it.
I remember Phil Jackson writing in one of his books how much it hurt him to cut Jannero Pargo from the Lakers back in 2004/2005 and how Pargo broke down into tears when he had to do it. You just hate to see that happen I guess.

Oh
if I actually had to be the bearer of bad news like Phil, I’d definitely feel the impact of it. For some reason, I also had an unnatural love for JuJu as well.
WNBA experiment over
Looks like our experiment to see whether a WNBA player could stick in this league is over with Squeaky being waived.
Mixed feelings about Summers being waived. He wasn’t particularly good, but he’s much younger than Sqeaky and could still definitely have a future in this league.
Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah
slow your roll, chief!!!!! There’s no need to be dissing Squeaky Johnson. As MWK said above:
Nobody could have been happier about making the Hornets than Squeaky Johnson and it’s just a shame to see him get cut.
He had family living in New Orleans wihen Katrina hit, and I was really hoping he’d make it with the team.

no future
He had absolutely no future with the team. He’s around same age as Chris Kaman for one so giving him development time made no sense at all. But unlike Chris Kaman, he had no trade value whatsoever so did not need to be showcased. Also, he didn’t do anything to help the team. I have no idea why he was signed… New Orleans roots?
So yeah… a sad day for Squeaky, but a positive development for the Hornets.
Um, and?
He may not have lit up the floor, but its not like theyre going to replace him with an allstar or he was taking up valuable bench space. And its not like his play was going to cost us a shot at the playoffs. What he did have was local roots and that is a draw under all circumstances (case in point, at the Sac game, who questions Marcus was the most popular player on the floor?). That sells tickets. Maybe not enough to pay his salary, but damn, its hard to pay to watch the tank.

One doesn't have to be mean
..to wish Squeaky well in some other line of business. Just like not everyone gets a call back on The Voice even though it is their dream to sing and they have some talent…We fans have dreams too…like I dream that when I pay close to $200 per ticket for season tickets, I might actually see a competitive team. Dream deferred.

Dream Deferred Indeed
More power to you, though. The franchise needs more fans like you.
And the fans need an owner who cares at the same time.

really?
Is it the home favorite thing? I guess I could understand that if Squeaky was at least a decent player, but I just don’t think he is.
I think there were probably quite a few solid backup PG options that we could have had instead of Squeaky. Jeremy Lin was waived several times in December, for example. So no, it wasn’t either we get an All-Star or we get Squeaky. And at 28 of course he is taking up valuable playing time and bench space.
Also, sometimes I don’t really get how this board doesn’t mind throwing some players under the bus but gets all misty eyed about others. Every season, it seems one or two players are just hated and can do little right, while others are loved and get a faithful following no matter how horribly they play.
Willie Green last season and Kaman this season come to mind. Green shot 44% off the pine last year and set the franchise record for consecutive field goals made, but got a reputation as a horrible shooter and somebody people were thankful the team finally got rid of him. People were still makingt jokes about him this season even though he’s no longer on the team. Now here’s Squeaky and he’s shooting 31%, and what a shame it is to see him go…
Maybe it’s the cute nickname? Maybe if it was Willie “Greenie” Green amd Chris “Chrissy” Kaman, people would get behind them more?
Coming to think of it, I don’t know why we didn’t just resign Green. There he is in Atlanta, making 42% of his 3s off the bench for $850k, an accuracy that probably nobody will even come remotely close to achieving on this team. But well, people are glad that we don’t have Green, but Sqeaky and his 31% getting cut? Just a darned shame… so upsetting…

me negative? lol
I hope you’re kidding!
I’m just stating the obvious that Sqeaky is not very good and he probably has no future in the NBA for the reasons I set out (age, ability, height, stats, etc.)
It’s not like I make a habit of bashing our players, though some posters certainly do that (how much flak have Willie Green, Jason Smith, Pondexter, Kaman etc. received from other posters??)
