We're two thirds of the way through the season and Gordon could be returning soon. If he does, our record doesn't need to improve by much for us to end up with a worse draft pick. It's hard for me to keep up with everything from the UK, especially college ball, so would appreciate your thoughts...
Let's say for arguments sake, that an injury free Hornets team is potentially capable of a record around .400. If all our injured players returned to the starting line up for the remaining 22 games, we'd maybe be capable of winning around 9 of them. Thankfully the bulk of operation tank has already taken place and even winning 9 more games would still leave us with a record of .303 - good enough for 3rd worst in the NBA as things stand.
Unfortunately, we'd only need to win 2 more games than that to overtake New Jersey and tie with Toronto. A slip from Sacramento and we're 6th worst. It seems a deep draft from what I've read and there'd still be a lot of talent left on the board at sixth, but I can't help hoping that Gordon remains on the sidelines for a while yet.
Looking at the draft and the players under contract for next season, I think we'd be crazy to use our own pick on anything other than a PF. It's a PF heavy draft from what I've read but some mock drafts have us taking Drummond (someone I really can't see Demps or Monty picking) or MKG, who definitely is their type of player but not a sensible choice in my opinion. If we take MKG then we need to move Ariza, and we won't get anything in return.
The players under contract next year give us a reasonable bench (Vasquez, Henry, Ayon, Smith, Aminu) and some solid to good starters (Gordon, Okafor, Ariza). It does leave us wanting a back up centre and a starting PF but our pick should get us a PF that can contribute straight away and the Mini pick could get a back up centre with an upside that'd be cheaper than re-signing Kaman. I don't think Jack is the point to take us forward and I'd much rather see us with a pass-first point guard, but you can't fault the guys effort and work ethic.
