After selecting Kentucky's Anthony Davis with the 1st overall pick of the 2012 NBA draft, the New Orleans Hornets used their second lottery selection to take Duke guard Austin Rivers.

Rivers is the son of Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, who was in attendance. At Duke, Rivers was primarily a shooting guard, displaying minimal creative ability for teammates, but numerous reports indicate that the Hornets are planning on using him at point guard to at least some degree. To select Rivers, the Hornets passed on big man options Tyler Zeller, Meyers Leonard, and Jarred Sullinger as well as shooting guard Jeremy Lamb.
