It's no secret that Hornets GM Dell Demps is a fan of JaVale McGee. At the trade deadline this past season, Demps attempted to acquire McGee from the Washington Wizards in a Carl Landry/Trevor Ariza/Chris Kaman for McGee/Rashard Lewis/2nd round pick proposal. The Wizards ultimately opted for a three team deal with the Clippers and the Nuggets.
McGee enters free agency tomorrow, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Demps pursue him again, with Emeka Okafor's departure creating a gaping hole at center. To this stage, all signs have pointed to McGee being an RFA. But in a bit of non-news news, there hasn't been a single report of Denver giving McGee a qualifying offer. They have until midnight to do so, or McGee becomes unrestricted.
I'd still bet on McGee receiving the offer in the next few hours (or someone reporting on it at least) and staying an RFA. But if he does become unrestricted, things could get pretty interesting. As an RFA, McGee would likely need to be overpaid to acquire. As a UFA, non-financial factors (playing alongside Anthony Davis, for example) may become a little more important, and the Hornets wouldn't have their cap space tied up for multiple days while simultaneously negotiating an Eric Gordon offer.
It's more than likely that Denver's just trolling everyone here, but it's something to keep an eye on nonetheless.
