I was really expecting someone with so little NBA coaching experience as well as such an inexperienced roster to be given more time to turn this team around. I guess the executives had other plans. Why hire Dunlap in the first place? (Besides the fact he was the only person willing to coach here)
I know his rotations were weird, he didn't get along with veterans well, and of course had a horrendous record, but what were we supposed to expect. This team just had the worst season in NBA history! Was he supposed to come in here and win 30, 40 games with Charlotte's roster after winning only seven the previous season? This firing is just frustrating because the young players are the ones who suffer from this and this constant revolving door of coaches stunts their growth and team chemistry.
I'm not saying I think Dunlap was the right guy, but I am more saying, What is this front office doing? Let Dunlap coach a few years, let him walk and then try to hire a better coach. The problem is that no one wants to coach in Charlotte. Brain Shaw said that he wanted to coach a team that had a chance, and Charlotte didn't have one, so he pulled his name from consideration. It would be hard to believe that Shaw or any coaching candidate with similar potential would want to take on this job now after not much has changed roster wise.
And frankly, if they hire Quin Snyder, I feel like that's taking a step back. Not criticizing Snyder's coaching ability, but I feel they could've hired him last year and instead they went with Dunlap. Hiring Snyder and having him this season is like two seasons with Dunlap.
I would like to see Charlotte make a hire that can be long term. The John Fox era with the Panthers was successful, to an extent, and it would be nice to see if the Bobcats could find a coach as consistent as Fox was for the Panthers. I personally like Alvin Gentry, and think his up-tempo style and play would greatly benefit our team. He was able to take an average roster with Nash to the verge of the playoffs. He was dealt a bad hand this year with poor contracts and suffered because of it.
It would bring some energy back to Charlotte if they could somehow make a splash hire. (And yes Gentry is a splash hire for Charlotte these days)
Who do you all think should coach or would be willing to coach the Bobcats?
