I have been a bobcats fan since the formation of the franchise. I watched 90% of the games on league pass in my college dorm room yelling at the computer screen like the few Bobkitty fans out there. I was never a Charlotte Hornets fan though. I am always happy to see a new jersey, logo, or even yes, team name. It seems to me though that a lot of the fans who are solely supportive of the Hornets are resistent to any change with their team. It all started when Jordan first announced the name change and released the "Back the Buzz" slogan. The colors of the slogan were Purple and Carolina Blue. I thought this was awesome, but it seemed like the overall consensus was that the colors had to be Teal and Purple.
The next problem came yesterday when one of the first concept designs for a new logo and jersey came out. I thought that these logos were awesome and were a solid transition from the Bobcats to the Hornets. Here they are:
To me, someone who was never a hornets fan, I think that this is way cooler than any logo that the hornets had previously. But to the Hornets faithful, "There's no Teal!". The original Charlotte Hornets logo was created in 1989, and I hope that the logo turns out to be nothing like it. There is a reason why teams change logos and jerseys. Not just to make money but because they need to stay trendy and modern. The Pelicans did not make some cheesy cartoonish logo for their rebranding, but instead chose an aggressive logo.
Hornets fans cannot be happy enough with just getting their "team" back. They want everything like it is still the 90's. Unfortunately it is 2013 and Hornets fans are going to have to start beelieving the Kemba and MKG can represent the Purple and Carolina Blue well enough for their Charlotte Hornets.
If any one is interested in seeing the concept jerseys that this guy made here is a link: http://ianbakar.com/Rebranding-Expanding-the-NBA
He has a lot of interesting logo designs for other NBA teams as well.
