Bobcats Must Retain Gerald Henderson

Restricted free agent shooting guard, Gerald Henderson, has already gotten a qualifying offer from Charlotte. Charlotte has no depth at shooting guard with Ben Gordon and Jeff Taylor as their backups. Gordon is an older player who is definitely a "coming off the bench" player. Jeff Taylor would be their only other option, but he is a second year player who is probably not ready to start in the NBA just yet.

Henderson, coming off a solid season in which he averaged 15.5 points per game, was a quality starter for Charlotte. Kemba Walker, a third year point guard will need that solid guy next to him when he's on the court. Since Henderson is a restricted free agent, Charlotte will have the option to match any offer put on the table by any team. Unless the deal is completely over the top, Charlotte shouldn't hesitate to match the offer. Henderson has the potential to be an All-Star in years to come. The Bobcats chose to draft Cody Zeller over higher rated, Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore and Alex Len. If Charlotte had drafted McLemore it would not be as big of a priority to re-sign Henderson. After agreeing with Al Jefferson to sign him to a 3 year, $40.5 million deal, they don't need to use any more money on a big man. They went from having possibly the worst frontcourt in the league to having an NBA respectable front court, involving 2012 number 2 overall pick, Michael Kidd Gilchrist, 2013 number 4 overall pick, Cody Zeller, and veteran center Al Jefferson. Henderson would complete that starting lineup for Charlotte, who already has a solid bench, headlining sixth man Ramon Sessions, and veteran, who picked up on his 2013-14 season player option, Ben Gordon.

Henderson is a solid jump shooter and post scorer. A good comparison might be a poor man's Dwyane Wade. Both have a polished post up game, are good jump shooters and good perimeter defenders. Henderson is probably a slightly better 3-point shooter. Henderson will most likely never be as highly regarded as D-Wade, but he is a very underrated NBA player. The good post game of his is rare for an undersized 6'5" shooting guard the way he is.

Henderson has the potential to be a top guard in this league. Because he isn't yet, the Cats shouldn't have to pay him too much. After a couple years, he could help the Bobcats/Hornets be a contender in the Southeast division.
