McRoberts avoid suspension in fallout from flagrant against LeBron

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

To the surprise of no one, Josh McRoberts has been fined for his elbow on LeBron.

The NBA announced Thursday afternoon that starting forward Josh McRoberts has been fined $20,000 for the contact against LeBron James in the last minute of Game 2. The foul, originally deemed a normal shooting foul, was upgraded to a flagrant 2 which would have ejected McRoberts from the game.

But McRoberts will not be suspended.

In the closing moments, the Bobcats were on the verge of a comeback attempt. LeBron James drove towards the basket, but Josh McRoberts was there to meet him. McRoberts put out his elbow/forearm towards LeBron's head/neck area. Surprisingly, the referees called it a common foul, not even a flagrant 1. LeBron shot two free throws and the game moved on.

Though McRoberts will not be suspended, the foul being upgraded could have a long term impact. McRoberts has been given a technical foul. Should the Bobcats last long enough in the playoffs and should McRoberts gain enough techs, he could be suspended in the future.

McRoberts and the Bobcats should consider themselves lucky. Usually when a player makes any motion towards another players neck or elbow he is suspended. The Bobcats can't afford to miss any players who make significant contributions, and they would have missed McRoberts' shooting and passing.
