Trevor Ariza: A GAMECHANGER

Photo

Recap in the morning. For now? It's a SBN sponsored post!

SBNBA blogs have written on their team's respective "Game Changers" today, ranging from Josh Harrellson to Spencer Hawes. (Go buy a PlayStation!). The Hornets' game changer (in a positive sense) this year has probably been Gustavo Ayon, but it feels apt to write about Trevor Ariza today. As RedHopeful has pointed out in the comments, Ariza's had the best month of his Hornets career. In many ways, this was the player New Orleans was trading for in the Darren Collison deal, the player they never actually got.

TV or Live?

SBNation and Samsung have collaborated on an advertising scheme where, if bloggers write three posts on "technology," we get kicked a little cash. Full disclosure: I like cash.

Last week, I wanted to know how you, intrepid Hornet fans, liked to watch the Hornets. Local TV seemed to be the majority answer with League Pass, expectedly, the second most common option.

Today, a different poll: which sport is most conducive to technology?

The televised vs. live debate swings either way on different sports. Pro football is considered a TV sport; even though certain venues enhance the game through their fans, atmosphere, etc, the statistics indicate that the NFL has become an absolutely dominant TV sport. I feel like baseball is on the other end of the spectrum. The slow pace of the game- brought on by breaks in between pitches, not much "action" on the field- can cause boredom via the television set. However, I think I enjoy live baseball more than any other live sport. The laid back rhythm and the ability to casually converse with surrounding fans are things I enjoy, in person.

Then there's the NHL. I've never been to a hockey game, but as people often say, hockey loses more in the live to TV translation than perhaps any other sport. The intensity of the players, the viciousness of the hits, and most importantly, the motion of the puck, are better enjoyed in person.

So, the question. Assuming they both cost you the same, would you rather watch an NBA game or TV (let's say good resolution, etc) or in person (let's say the middle rows, lower level)?

Watching the Hornets

SBNation and Samsung have collaborated on an advertising scheme where, if bloggers write three posts on "technology," we get kicked a little cash. Full disclosure: I like cash.

Last week, we looked at the science of still images. Today, let’s go with something less frivolous- moving images.

Specifically, I’m interested in how all of you watch/track/follow Hornets’ games.

I tried to set up a DirecTV League Pass TV account this year, only to be shot down by various complications. So for the third consecutive year, I’m watching games through League Pass Broadband. LPB does have its drawbacks. For one, it’s not exactly cheap. I picked up the "choice" version this year, picking New Orleans, Sacramento, Portland, Golden State, Orlando, Miami, and New York. For two, receiving the highest quality feed requires moderately fast connection speeds. And for three, switching between the full size player and the game day open threads is mildly annoying.

But beyond that, I get to watch almost every Hornet game this season on my computer. That’s certainly worth the price.

I know there are many other ways people keep up. I'm personally a big fan of following games through the radio. The Hornets have great radio guys; in general, I think radio announcers are a good bit better than their television counterparts because they have to be. They have to paint an accurate picture of everything that's happening on the floor. There's a lot less time for announcers to interject their own thoughts and ideas (and as we see so often, the majority of TV announcers tend to throw in poor analysis whenever they can).

So that's me. How do you keep up with the Hornets?

Some Awesome Pictures

Photo

There have been many, many innovations in just the last ten years that have totally changed the way we follow sports. In the 90's, I'd look up the Charlotte Hornets in the newspaper box score every day, and that was pretty much it. In fact, outside of the still-images on my Hornet trading cards, I don't think I ever actually saw a Hornet player (on TV, etc). for the first five or so years of my fandom. (Yes, in retrospect, this seems insane to me too).

So in the spirit of technology (the technology of... cameras), here are some of the best pictures from Opening Night in New Orleans.
