Bobcats work out Josh Howard, might give Tracy McGrady a look

In a group of exploratory moves, the Bobcats have brought in more players for workouts to look at filling in their roster. Like their recent signing of Brendan Haywood, they too have their ties to the Carolinas.

Josh Howard, a Winston-Salem native, spent his college years at Wake Forest and played for the Dallas Mavericks for the majority of his career. Coincidentally enough, he was dealt to Washington as part of the same trade that returned Haywood to Dallas. Last year Howard played sparingly for the Utah Jazz. At 6'7", he mostly plays small forward but can be used at multiple positions, depending on lineups. Or he can't be used at any position, because he has often been injured throughout his career, most recently a left quadriceps injury and surgery to his left knee. At his age, this has to be a concern. Of course Howard's not going to be expensive, but for a guy who hasn't scored efficiently in years and takes a good many shots, it's probably not even worth it, even with the Bobcats' need for a veteran presence at the position.

And then there's a player they might bring in, who I would be more excited to see on the team.

It's Tracy McGrady (as Rick Bonnell reports)! Sure, injuries have robbed the former Mount Zion Christian Academy star (of Durham! I told you there was a tie to the Carolinas!) of the explosiveness that once made him one of the most dangerous players in the past decade, but last year showed he still has some left in the tank. Again, with his injury status and age, there are concerns with him as well. But I'm more confident in his ability to contribute than Howard's. He's a more efficient scorer with a more diverse offensive skill set, can still finish decently well at the rim and score from a lot of places on the court. Tracy McGrady could be a really cost-effective veteran signing.

These workouts or possible workouts or whatever are interesting. The Bobcats' backcourt is already pretty full with Ramon Sessions, Kemba Walker, Gerald Henderson, Ben Gordon, Reggie Williams, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Jeffery Taylor, yet they're looking at adding another swingman. Perhaps it indicates possible future movement at the SG or SF, hardly a radical thought considering the team's constant adjusting with Rich Cho's desire to add assets. Or maybe I'm just reading way too much into an intent to just fill out the roster with a veteran presence.
