Charlotte Hornets switching up radio, TV broadcasts: Lauer out, Martin in

A familiar voice is returning to the airwaves.

Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets announced Thursday that Steve Martin, long the play-by-play announcer for Charlotte basketball television broadcasts, will be returning to the radio to become the team's play-by-play announcer there. Charlotte announced earlier this week that long time radio play-by-play announcer Scott Lauer would not be returning to the team next season.

Martin had the following to say on the subject:

"I’m happy to be going back to my roots. Radio is where I started my career and I'm excited about calling all the Hornets action on our flagship station WFNZ 610-AM and throughout the Hornets radio network."

This will not be the first time Martin has called Charlotte Hornets radio broadcasts. He was the original "voice of the Hornets," serving as the team's radio voice from 1988-1994 before moving to television broadcasts from 1994-2002.

The moves were a bit surprising, given that Martin and Dell Curry had formed a nice chemistry over the past few years.

The next question becomes who will take over Martin's spot as play-by-play announcer for television broadcasts.
