Courtney Lee has bounced around to a handful of teams throughout his career, but has never been a bad player in any of his stops. A career 38 percent shooter from 3-point range he provides spacing on the wing with some solid defense on the other end. However, he's nothing more than a borderline starter or role player on most NBA teams.
Brian Roberts was signed by the Hornets in free agency a few years ago and just hasn't panned out the way they were hoping he would. Roberts scoring from earlier in his career hasn't translated over to Charlotte, and he struggles to run the offense when on the floor. He's not a bad player, but he just hasn't fit in Charlotte. It turns out this was a three team deal involving the Miami Heat, and it looks like Roberts will be heading to south beach.
P.J. Hairston was taken in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft out of North Carolina. He's been hit and miss so far in his short career, but has for the most part been unimpressive. He tries really hard on defense which will fit Memphis, but as a scorer he's pretty limited. Hairston's value on offense relies entirely on if he's shooting well or not, because he doesn't do much else.
This is a fantastic trade for Charlotte. They managed to give up two players who haven't played particularly great with the Hornets for a guy who's rarely been bad anywhere in his career. Lee might not be the best wing player in the NBA, but with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist out for the season he'll provide some quality defense, and more importantly he shoots well from 3-point range. Great trade.
