The Charlotte Hornets signed Marvin Williams two years ago to provide a solid stretch four, and some even better perimeter defense. After an incredible season in a great playoff run, the Hornets saw the value Williams can bring when he's playing his best. Now that the Hornets have re-signed Nicolas Batum they will be looking to get a deal done with Williams ASAP.
Now that the Hornets have retained Nicolas Batum, league sources say Charlotte is actively working to seal a deal with Marvin Williams ASAP— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 1, 2016
Earlier today, the Hornets lost another key free agent from last season in Jeremy Lin. There have also been reports that indicate Courtney Lee could be on his way out as well so it makes sense that Charlotte would be looking to get Williams under contract as soon as they can. Everybody knew Charlotte would miss out on one or two key players from last season, but keeping as much of last year's team together as possible is definitely their goal at the moment.
Williams had a great season. He averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game which might not wow anybody, but he was always consistent. If the ball found him open in the corner he was more than likely going to hit that 3-point shot. Charlotte could always trust him to make the correct rotation on defense, or help when he was needed. He might not be as important as others on the roster, but he's a key player that the Hornets find value in.
