Charlotte’s execution was terrible down the stretch. Kemba Walker had a turnover, missed a free throw, and committed a bad foul. Jrue Holiday hit a couple of big buckets for the Pelicans down the stretch.
It was similar issues that plagued Charlotte in this one. They attempted 31 free throws, but only made 18 of them. Charlotte also just had 16 assists, and six made 3’s. The primary source of offense was Dwight Howard, who is playing excellent basketball as of late. Dwight had 22 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks.
Howard was significant in helping the Hornets win the rebound battle 49-42. Marvin Williams also had a season-high 14 rebounds along with 14 points, and he was a Hornets best +5 for the game. Kemba had 20 points, but only shot 8-for-21 from the field and had six turnovers, including a costly one down the stretch. The only other Hornet in double figures was Frank Kaminsky, who had a nice game with 16 points off the bench.
New Orleans helped keep Charlotte in the game with 16 turnovers, but Charlotte only turned that into 16 points. On the other hand, the Hornets had 14 turnovers that led to 20 Pelican points.
On the Pelican side, Anthony Davis and Holiday led the charge with 19 points apiece. Demarcus Cousins after a historic game against Chicago only had 16 points and 13 rebounds. The only other Pelican in double figures was E’Twaun Moore with 11 points.
It was a close game throughout, but Charlotte hurt itself the most in the first and fourth quarter. The defense in the first was awful as the Pelicans jumped out to a 32-21 lead after the first. In the fourth, Charlotte couldn’t execute down the stretch and the Pelicans won the quarter 25-23.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist did not look great after missing a game with an injury. He only played 23 minutes and had seven points and four fouls. The bench beside Frank Kaminsky just chipped in 10 points.
In the big picture, this is a bad loss. Charlotte is now 19-27 and five games out of the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. It is also another loss in this homestand that was supposed to turn the season around. Charlotte had a couple of nice wins prior, but can’t string wins together. Hopefully, they can salvage it Friday night against the Atlanta Hawks.
