Hornets waive Thomas Welsh, sign Jalen McDaniels

The Hornets have finally inked their second second round pick.

The Charlotte Hornets waived center Thomas Welsh today, according to Rick Bonnell.

Welsh signed a non-guaranteed one year deal with the Hornets back in August, so releasing him comes with no ramifications for the team. As Bonnell notes in the Tweet, Welsh is a prime candidate for a spot on the Greensboro Swarm. He’ll have to clear waivers first, which will happen on Saturday.

Welsh played in just six minutes against the Heat after not seeing the floor for the Hornets in their preseason opener in Boston. His release won’t change anything for the preseason or the regular season.

No word yet on what the Hornets will do with the open roster spot, or even if they’ll make use of it. 2019 second round pick Jalen McDaniels seems like the most likely option to take the spot, but the Hornets may elect to hold onto his draft rights and sign him later.

Update: The Hornets did in fact replace Welsh with McDaniels.
