It was always likely that the Hornets would target a big with the 32nd overall pick, but Carey is a little bit of a surprise at this spot. He’s a burly center that is a little reminiscent of old school centers.
He was named All ACC as a freshman after averaging 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. He’s shown some semblance of an outside shot, hitting 38.1% of his 3-point attempts, albeit on extremely low volume.
There’s no question that Carey can put the ball in the bucket. He’ll have to show he can defend to get court time, but if that happens, the Hornets may have a gotten themselves a very solid player.
They still have one more pick left tonight—number 56 overall.
