Update: They did it again.
The move makes more sense the second time around with Devonte’ Graham nursing an ankle injury.
The Charlotte Hornets have signed guard Joe Chealey to a 10-day contract, per Rod Boone of The Athletic.
#Hornets are signing Joe Chealey to a 10-day contract, per league sources. They had to make a roster move and sign someone by tomorrow.— Rod Boone (@rodboone) February 21, 2020
As Boone notes in the Tweet, the Hornets had until Saturday to acquire a player to get their roster back up to the 14-player minimum.
This signing is rather lackluster. Chealey was on a two-way contract with the Hornets last season and got into exactly one game during garbage time.
He has spent all of this season with the Greensboro Swarm and has seen his numbers drop across the board since last season. He’s averaging 11.1 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.3 rebounds in 28.3 minutes per game.
Chealey provides depth at the point guard spot, which is something the Hornets haven’t had all season. He probably won’t see any meaningful game action though.
It would’ve been nice to see the Hornets make a more exciting move to fill this roster spot, but I guess it was not meant to be.
