Who should Hornets fans root for in the bubble?

The Hornets got left out of the resumption of the NBA season, but that doesn’t mean Hornets fans have no one to root for.

The NBA is set to resume play with 22 teams in a couple weeks. The Charlotte Hornets are not one of those teams. As a fan of the team, that’s disappointing. The Hornets were playing good basketball when the season was halted, and the team’s young players looked to be hitting their stride. There are talks of a second bubble existing for the eight teams not included in the season restart, but that wouldn’t happen until some time in September. In the meantime, Hornets fans needs someone to root for in the bubble that actually matters.

There are a few teams featuring former Hornets in the bubble. The Indiana Pacers have Jeremy Lamb, but he’s out for the foreseeable future as he recovers from a gruesome knee injury. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Frank Kaminsky are with the Mavericks and Suns respectively. But the player that most deserves our fandom is Marvin Williams, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Williams stated months ago that he’s considering retiring at the end of this season, and there’d be no better way to enter retirement than with a championship ring. Williams previously spent the better part of six seasons with the Hornets and was the consummate professional the entire time. He was a beloved veteran leader and gave some of the most insightful interviews with reporters.

If this is indeed the end of Marvin Williams’ NBA career, Hornets fans can root for it to happen in style. It’s not the same as rooting for the home team, but there are few players in the NBA that are as easy to root for as Marvin Williams. He deserves a championship. Hopefully he can get it as a member of the Bucks.
