Tonight is the big night. The night the Charlotte Hornets get the top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Or maybe they don’t.

History suggests the Hornets have no luck with these things, but the gambler’s fallacy will say that the Hornets are due for some good luck.

Ping pong balls will be drawn in a secret room prior to the lottery TV special. Executives and media members will be present at the lottery drawing to watch out for any funny business and assuage concerns about lottery fixing. There will be four drawings to determine the top four picks. The rest of the picks will be ordered by final season standings.

We talked a little bit about the Hornets odds to land each pick here. To review:

1st: 6.0%
2nd: 6.3%
3rd: 6.7%
4th: 7.2%

Top 4: 26.2%

8th: 34.5%

9th: 32.1%

10th or lower: 7.2%

Tankathon has a really good breakdown of all the lottery odds for every team.

The lottery special is scheduled to start at 8:30, but it’s squeezed between a couple of playoff games tonight. The time may change a bit depending on how the Bucks/Magic game goes. Usually the actual drawing comes near the end of the program, so I’d expect it to happen sometime around 8:45 or 8:50, but don’t quote me on that.

Devonte’ Graham will be the Hornets representative at the drawing, and hopefully he brings the franchise some much needed good luck.
