Key dates for the offseason and next season

New, comments

The league has set its schedule up through the end of next season. Let’s see what’s on the horizon.

We’re fully into the offseason and Shams just announced the dates for next season’s start, end, and everything else, per his sources, so I figured it’d be a good time to put out all the dates that you should mark on your calendar as ardent Charlotte Hornets fans. So here we go:

  • June 19-21 - G League Elite camp. This is basically the combine for G Leaguers and draft prospects that weren’t invited to the actual combine. The Martin brothers started out here (though I believe one or both of them eventually got invited to the actual combine as well).
  • June 21-27 - NBA Draft Combine. We missed this last year because of covid. Most of the good but not elite prospects will get measured and tested, and some of the less established prospects play in scrimmages that are generally pretty fun to watch.
  • June 22 - NBA Draft Lottery. This is when the basketball gods smile upon the Hornets once again as they leap into the top four for the 2021 NBA Draft.
  • July 29 - NBA Draft. It’s late this year because of the late season, but we get us a nice mid-summer NBA Draft night that should be pretty close to normal. And we get to see the Hornets make another top four pick given what happened in the last bullet point.
  • August 1 - Last day for options to be exercised and qualified offers extended
  • August 2 - Teams are allowed to start negotiating with players at 6:00 Eastern Time. That is also the time when Woj will publish all his drafts of the deals that have somehow already been agreed upon.
  • August 3 - Restricted free agents can sign offer sheets and draft picks can sign their contracts.
  • August 6 - Teams can officially sign free agents starting at noon eastern
  • August 8 - 17 - Summer League. These are like my favorite 10 days of the year. Sometimes I think I enjoy the Summer League more than the real basketball.
  • September 28 - Training camps start. We get really excited that basketball is back but then we don’t get to really see anything for a few more days. Everybody is in great shape.
  • October 19 - Regular season starts. This is in line with a normal start to the season.
  • April 16 - Playoffs start. The Hornets will be there.
  • June 23 - 2022 NBA Draft. This is when the draft is normally held, so we’re back to full normalcy at this point
